WHAT:
Macedonian pianist Simon Trpčeski returns to Walt Disney Concert Hall, Tuesday, February 22, at 8 p.m. The program showcases Chopin nocturnes, and includes the California premiere of Songs and Whispers by Trpčeski’s compatriot Pande Shahov, which quotes Chopin in the context of Macedonian folk music. Additionally, the program opens and closes with sonatas by Haydn and Prokofiev. The recital is part of the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s 2010/11 Colburn Celebrity series, which features some of the world’s leading virtuosos.
With the ability to perform a diverse range of repertoire—from Haydn and Chopin to Debussy and Stravinsky—Macedonian pianist Simon Trpčeski has established himself as one of the most remarkable young musicians to have emerged in recent years, praised not only for his impeccable technique and delicate expression, but also for his warm personality and commitment to strengthening Macedonia’s cultural image. Trpčeski has appeared with many of the world’s finest orchestras.
Remaining performances for the 2010/11 Colburn Celebrity recital series season include: pianist Yefim Bronfman (March 9, 2011); and flutist Sir James Galway and the Emerson String Quartet (March 14, 2011).
