  • Series Reaches More Than 800,000 Listeners

The KUSC broadcast series of the Los Angeles Philharmonic has been made possible through the support of the Office of Los Angeles County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky

The Los Angeles Philharmonic and Classical KUSC continue their annual radio broadcast partnership, which last year expanded to more than 160 markets nationwide, and now reaches more than 800,000 listeners. The 13 concerts, recorded during the LA Phil’s 2010/11 season, feature the orchestra with an impressive roster of guest artists and conductors. The first broadcast, recorded October 14 – 17, 2010, presents Olivier Messiaen’s Turangalîla-symphonie, featuring LA Phil Music Director Gustavo Dudamel, pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet, and Cynthia Millar playing the ondes martenot. It airs locally on KUSC-FM 91.5 Los Angeles, Sunday, April 3, 2011, at 4 p.m.

Other series highlights include performances by noted soloists: pianists Peter Serkin and Jeremy Denk; mezzo-sopranos Anne Sofie von Otter and Kelley O’Connor; bass-baritones Willard White and Bryn Terfel; violinists Leila Josefowicz and Renaud Capuçon; soprano Christine Schäfer; baritone Matthias Goerne; and cellist Gautier Capuçon. Guest conductors include: Pablo Heras-Casado, Leonard Slatkin and Thomas Adès. Guest ensembles and orchestras are: Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, Glorious Percussion and the Los Angeles Master Chorale. The series also includes the West Coast premieres of Wynton Marsalis’ LA Phil-commissioned Swing Symphony, Thomas Adès’ Polaris, and Gerald Mackey’s Beautiful Passing. LA Phil Music Director Gustavo Dudamel and LA Phil Conductor Laureate Esa-Pekka Salonen are featured during the series.

In total, more than 120 stations carry the broadcasts, breaking down to one commercial station, 15 NPR stations, 6 non-commercial stations and 100 repeater/translator stations. Additional local coverage areas include KDSC-FM 91.1 Thousand Oaks, KQSC-FM 88.7 Santa Barbara, KPSC-FM 88.5 Palm Springs, and KESC-FM 99.7 Morro Bay/San Luis Obispo. A complete list of concert programs follows. This information as well as the participating stations can also be found by visiting LAPhil.com or KUSC.org.

Interviews and features with soloists and orchestra members are heard throughout the series, offering unique insights and giving listeners a more in-depth perspective. Brian Lauritzen is the producer and host for the series.

“I am delighted to continue Classical KUSC’s great partnership with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the WFMT Radio Network and bring the artistry of the LA Phil to radio audiences nationwide,” says Lauritzen. “I believe the concerts in this broadcast series represent the unique combination of classic and contemporary repertoire that has become a hallmark for the LA Philharmonic. I’m also very excited to bring a pair of concerts from the orchestra’s recent European tour with Gustavo Dudamel to the series.”

“KUSC is delighted to share with the nearly 800,000 people who tune in to the station each week another extraordinary season of concerts by the Los Angeles Philharmonic,” says KUSC Program Director Gail Eichenthal. “We are extremely proud of our partnership with this great orchestra, which began more than 30 seasons ago!”

“We constantly strive to find new and unique ways in which to bring classical music to as broad an audience as possible,” says Debora Borda, President of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association. “And it is through our long-time partner KUSC that we can continue to share all of the exciting work that happens at Walt Disney Concert Hall. Through this partnership, we have both grown and evolved in the best ways as we continue to broaden our audience and share the gift of music with an even wider audience. We owe great thanks to KUSC for their role in this and to County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky for helping to make these broadcasts possible.”

The Los Angeles Philharmonic Association, under the vibrant leadership of Gustavo Dudamel, presents the finest in orchestral and chamber music, recitals, new music, jazz, world music and holiday concerts at two of the most remarkable locations anywhere to experience music – Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Hollywood Bowl. In addition to a 30-week winter subscription season at Walt Disney Concert Hall, the LA Phil presents a 12-week summer festival at the legendary Hollywood Bowl, summer home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and home of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. In fulfilling its commitment to the community, the Association’s involvement with Los Angeles extends to educational concerts, children's programming and community concerts, ever seeking to provide inspiration and delight to the broadest possible audience.
