Concerts Are Part of Target Around Town Concert Series

The Los Angeles Philharmonic Association presents four Neighborhood Concerts as part of its Target Around Town series featuring the Los Angeles Philharmonic conducted by Associate Conductor Alexander Mickelthwate and Assistant Conductor Joana Carneiro on Wednesday, May 24, at 8 p.m., at Rolling Hills Covenant Church; Thursday, May 25, at 7 p.m., at Alhambra High School; Friday, May 26, at 8 p.m., at West Angeles Cathedral; and Saturday, May 27, at 8 p.m., at the Luckman Fine Arts Complex, California State University, Los Angeles. Admission to the concerts is free, but tickets are recommended.

The May 24 Rolling Hills Covenant Church and May 25 Alhambra High School programs, conducted by Carneiro, include Mussorgsky's Night on Bald Mountain (arr. by Rimsky-Korsakov), Liadov's Baba-Yaga, The Enchanted Lake, and Kikimora, and Stravinsky's The Firebird, Suite (1919). Tickets for the Rolling Hills Covenant Church performance are free (limit: 6 tickets per request) and may be picked up at the main office of Rolling Hills Covenant Church. Tickets and information for the Alhambra High School performance are available by calling (626) 308-2255 or (626) 308-2342 between 8:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. or by sending a request along with a self addressed, stamped envelope to Alhambra Unified School District, Superintendent's Office, 15 West Alhambra Road, Alhambra, CA 91801. There is a limit of six tickets per request. Alhambra High School is located at 101 S. 2nd Street in Alhambra.

Carneiro also conducts the Friday, May 26 concert at West Angeles Cathedral, which features Mussorgsky's Night on Bald Mountain (arr. by Rimsky-Korsakov), Verdi's "Gerusalem … Gerusalem …" from I Lombardi and "Va, pensiero" from Nabucco, Mascagni's "Regina coeli... Inneggiamo" from Cavalleria Rusticana, and Stravinsky's The Firebird, Suite (1919). The Community Chorus is featured on the Verdi and Mascagni works. For ticket information, call (323) 731-3012. Free parking is available in the Church parking structure on the east side of Crenshaw between Jefferson and 36th Street, with additional parking available at 30th and Crenshaw. Priority seating will be given to ticket holders who arrive early. Doors open at 7:15 p.m. for ticket holders. Seating for people without tickets begins at 7:45 p.m. West Angeles Cathedral is located at 3600 Crenshaw Boulevard in Los Angeles.

The May 27 performance at the Luckman Fine Arts Complex is conducted by Mickelthwate and includes Milhaud's Le Boeuf sur le Toit and Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade. The Luckman Fine Arts Complex is located on the campus of California State University, Los Angeles, 5151 State University Drive, Los Angeles, CA 90032. ALEXANDER MICKELTHWATE is the newly appointed Music Director of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, and he will also serve as the Associate Conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic for the 2006/07 season. As assistant conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic for the past two years, Mickelthwate has led the orchestra in programs at Walt Disney Concert Hall, appearing on the Green Umbrella new music series, education and community concerts, and at the Hollywood Bowl. In January 2006, following a performance of Boulez's "Le Marteau Sans Maître " with the Philharmonic's New Music Group, Mark Swed of the LA Times wrote, "Alexander Mickelthwate has been a fearless assistant conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Mickelthwate conducted very much in the Boulez manner: calm under pressure, sure of ever-changing meters…" As a guest conductor, Mickelthwate has appeared with the symphony orchestras of Atlanta, Baltimore, Chicago, Dallas, Honolulu, Houston, Indianapolis, Nashville, New Jersey, Oregon, and Toronto; the Brooklyn Philharmonic, the Chicago Civic Orchestra, the Cleveland Chamber Symphony, the Eos Orchestra, and the National Arts Centre Orchestra (Ottawa). Abroad, Mickelthwate made his European debut with the Hamburg Symphony in April 2006. During his tenure as assistant conductor with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, which he completed at the end of the 2003-04 season, he co-founded the new music ensemble, Bent Frequency, which was hailed by Gramophone Magazine as "one of the brightest ensembles on the scene." Always striving to engage young people in music, he conducted more than 60 Young People's Concerts with the Atlanta Symphony, and organized an exchange between the Atlanta Youth Symphony and Berlin Youth Orchestra during the summer of 2003, hosting concerts in both cities.

JOANA CARNEIRO, conductor, has already attracted considerable attention as an outstanding young conductor. She joined the Philharmonic at the beginning of the 2004/2005 season and is also principal guest conductor of the Metropolitan Orchestra of Lisbon. A finalist of the 2002 Maazel-Vilar Conductor's Competition at Carnegie Hall, Carneiro was recognized by the jury for demonstrating a level of potential that holds great promise for her future career. Since then, her profile has grown quickly both in the U.S. and Europe. She recently completed her tenure as music director of the Los Angeles Debut Orchestra and has also served as music director of the Campus Philharmonia Orchestra (Michigan), and as assistant conductor of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra. She has conducted the Frankfurt Radio Symphony, the Toledo Symphony Orchestra, the Macau Chamber Orchestra and Beijing Orchestra at the International Musica Festival of Macau, and the Beiras Philharmonic Orchestra. A native of Lisbon, Carneiro began her musical studies as a violist before receiving her conducting degree from the Academia Nacional Superior de Orquestra in Lisbon. Carneiro received her master's degree in orchestral conducting from Northwestern University, and she is currently pursuing her doctorate with a full scholarship at the University of Michigan, where she studies conducting with Kenneth Kiesler.
