GRANDEZA MEXICANA FOLK BALLET COMPANY was founded by Jose Vences in September 2003. Currently, Grandeza Mexicana Folk Ballet Company has over 30 dancers and is a non-profit performing arts organization. The company was formed to advance the field of Mexican folk ballet, enhance the public’s appreciation for the diversity and depth of Mexican culture, and to present high-quality dance productions.

With signature pride in the rich national culture, Grandeza Mexicana Folk Ballet Company presents high-caliber dance productions that represent the diverse regions of Mexico. Whether choreographic works depict celebrations, ceremonies, or daily rituals, they are a colorful slice of the flavor of Mexico. Backed by careful research, GMFBC’s choreography is committed to preserving the traditions and customs of Mexico’s historic past and promising present.

The Company has achieved recognition for its strength, artistic flair, use of elaborate costuming, and commitment to quality. GMFBC’s artistic expression has garnered top awards, including the Lestor Horton award for costuming. The Company is Los Angeles’ premiere Mexican folk dance company, having performed at The Music Center for the Los Angeles County Holiday Celebration, the Terrace Theater of Long Beach, The Center for the Arts in Sacramento, The Marjorie Luke Theatre in Santa Barbara, The Ford Amphitheatre of Los Angeles, The Alex Theatre of Glendale, at the Skirball Cultural Center, and alongside acclaimed artists such as the world-famous José Feliciano, Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán, and Mariachi Sol de Mexico.

Grandeza Mexicana Folk Ballet Company is committed to providing various community outreach programs to educate, enrich, and entertain audiences of all ages and ethnicities through its program, “Ven a Ver y Aprender (Come, See and Learn),” which includes workshops provided to local schools, dance departments, conferences, and the general public.

GMFBC has sponsored several free and/or low cost workshops, bringing a dance and theatre-going experience to disadvantaged youth. Additionally, Grandeza has sponsored discussions to bring to light important political issues that intersect with the art communities.

The opening of the Conservatory of Mexican Folk Arts, which is home to GMFBC’s official school, also took place in 2003. The Conservatory focuses on high-caliber dance classes as well as other expressions of music and theater. All of the programs emphasize preserving and expressing Mexico’s unique and rich culture. GM Dance Academy is an award-winning dance troupe that has performed in and around greater Los Angeles.

The Mission of the Grandeza Mexicana Folk Ballet Company is to perpetuate and showcase the splendor of Mexican Folk dance, and to cultivate and promote public awareness and appreciation of this rich and diverse cultural heritage.
