In September 2002, GIANCARLO GUERRERO began his tenure as music director of the Eugene Symphony and in his first two seasons has undertaken a series of all nine Beethoven symphonies. A champion of new music, he has also initiated an exciting guest-composer series with the Eugene Symphony, and under his leadership the ensemble has hosted several of America’s most respected composers, including John Adams, John Corigliano, Jennifer Higdon and Aaron Jay Kernis. The orchestra has had the privilege of performing the West Coast premieres of their most recent works. This coming season, they will be host to another young American composer, Michael Daugherty.
Guerrero made very successful debuts with the Dallas Symphony, Seattle Symphony and the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl. He was immediately reengaged by the Philharmonic and conducts two programs at The Bowl in July 2005, he also returns to the Texas later this year to tour the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. Also during the summer of 2005 he debuts with the Philadelphia Orchestra performing at The Mann Center. Other recent orchestral engagements in North America include appearances with the orchestras of Minnesota, Houston, Detroit, Oregon, North Carolina, San Diego and San Antonio, and the National Symphony Orchestra, Washington. Guerrero returns to Nashville Symphony to open and close the 2005/6 season.
In demand in both Central and South America Guerrero conducts regularly in Venezuela, both with the Orquesta Sinfonica Simon Bolivar as well as Orquesta Sinfonica de Venezuela. His debut at the Casals Festival with Yo-Yo Ma and the Puerto Rico will be followed by a return to the festival to conduct the Verdi Requiem. Also in 2005 he debuted at the Teatro Colon, Argentina.
Equally at home with opera, Mr. Guerrero works regularly with the Costa Rican Lyric Opera and in recent seasons has conducted new productions of Carmen, La Bohème and most recently a new production of Rigoletto.
In 2003 Guerrero concluded his tenure as Associate Conductor of the Minnesota Orchestra. Whilst in Minnesota he distinguished himself in every arena of his many activities with the organization. His frequent appearances at Symphony for the Cities, Adventures in Music for Families, Young People’s and other concerts have introduced him to audiences at Orchestra Hall and beyond. Mr. Guerrero made his Minnesota Orchestra subscription debut in March 2000, as conductor of the world premiere of John Corigliano’s “Phantasmagoria on the Ghosts of Versailles.” He returned on subscription every subsequent season during his tenure.
In June 2004 Mr. Guerrero was awarded the Helen M. Thompson Award by the American Symphony Orchestra League.
