After reading Russian and English at Leeds University, JONATHAN GUNTHORPE (Aaron [Wild Thing with Horns]) studied at the Royal College of Music and the National Opera Studio, London. Roles include English Clerk in Death in Venice for La Scala, Milan, La Monnaie, Brussels, Concertgebouw, Amsterdam, and English National Opera; Nachtigall in Die Meistersinger and Angelotti in Tosca for the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden; and Dancaire in Carmen for Welsh National Opera. He has also performed in Germany, Spain, Italy, France, Portugal, Israel, and Norway, in a wide variety of roles including Papageno in The Magic Flute, Arsenio in La Spinalba, The Soul in Grabmusik, Alcandro in L’Olimpiade, Mr Noah in Noye’s Fludde, and Faber in The Knot Garden. He has also appeared at the National Theatre, London, in Brecht’s Mother Courage with Fiona Shaw and is currently writing a new translation for Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin.

His recordings include Lalande’s Music for the Sun King, Spicer’s Easter Oratorio, Brahms German Folksongs with Malcolm Martineau, Neukomm’s Missa Solemnis, and Bach’s Cantata No. 61 with The Bach Players. In concert, Gunthorpe has performed repertoire ranging from French baroque and Bach to Britten and many new commissions at venues such as the Wigmore Hall, Barbican, and Queen Elizabeth Hall in London, as well as Birmingham Symphony Hall, the National Concert Hall, Dublin, Parco della Roma, and La Chaise Dieu.

In 2013, he makes his debut at Théâtre du Châtelet, Paris, in Lee Blakeley’s new production of Sunday in the Park with George.
