Mezzo-soprano SUZANNA GUZMÁN, a native Californian born in East Los Angeles, is an Associate Artist of the Los Angeles Music Center Opera, a tradition established by Los Angeles Opera to acknowledge the international status of its core members. She performs as a principal artist with many of the worlds finest companies including the Metropolitan Opera, Kennedy Center Opera, Washington Opera, Seattle Opera, the Grand Théâtre in Geneva, and at the Edinburgh Festival. She first came to international attention at the 1991 Spoleto Festival with her portrayal of the Duchess of Alba in the Euopean premiere of Gian Carlo Menotti’s Goya. She is a favorite with Los Angeles audiences, having performed in Mozart’s Così fan tutte, Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, Mozart’s Magic Flute, and Rossini’s Tancredi. She also appeared in the world premieres of Daniel Catán’s Florencia en el Amazonas and Tobias Picker’s Fantastic Mr. Fox here in Los Angeles, as well as performances of Penella’s El gato montés, which were nationally televised on PBS. Guzmán has also performed nationally in production of The King and I opposite Yul Bryner, as well as Show Boat, Carousel, and West Side Story. In concert, she has appered with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the American Composer’s Orchestra, and the Roger Wagner Chorale.
