Best known as a composer, MARVIN HAMLISCH has written music for film, stage, recordings, and concert halls. As conductor, he has led the great orchestras of the world, and as a pianist and entertainer he has performed with ensembles and in a solo capacity. Hamlisch has won virtually every major award: three Oscars, four Grammys, three Emmys, a Tony, and three Golden Globe awards. His groundbreaking show, A Chorus Line, received the Pulitzer Prize. Among the Broadway shows Hamlisch has composed are They’re Playing Our Song and The Goodbye Girl. He is the composer of more than 40 film scores including his Oscar-winning score and song for The Way We Were and his adaptation of Scott Joplin’s music for The Sting, for which he received his third Oscar. Marvin Hamlisch holds the position of Principal Pops Conductor with both the Pittsburgh Symphony and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestras. In 2000, Hamlisch will assume that same post with the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, DC. – the first time that anyone has held such a position with that orchestra. Hamlisch is a graduate of both Juilliard and Queens College. His most recent Hollywood Bowl appearance was in 1997.
