Described by The Observer newspaper as “the most imaginative director of opera working in Britain today” Netia Jones is a director, designer and film-maker in opera, theatre and classical music. A “leading pioneer in integrating film and video into live music performances” (Times), she is the Director of Lightmap, a mixed media creative studio working in the UK, Europe and the USA.
Recent projects include Curlew River with Ian Bostridge for Lincoln Center, CalPerformances, Carolina Performing Arts, and the Barbican London, Feldman’s Words and Music for Happy Days International Beckett Festival in Ireland, and Kurtág’s Kafka Fragments for The Royal Opera House.
In 2012 Netia directed Where the Wild Things Are and Higglety Pigglety Pop! for the Aldeburgh Festival, Barbican Theatre, London, Tanglewood and the LA Philharmonic. In 2013 Netia created film for the LA Philharmonic Gala 10th Anniversary of the Walt Disney Hall, celebrating the work of Architect Frank Gehry, and for the 2014 Gala in celebration of the music of John Williams. In Miami and Chicago she created a production of Inverno In-ver by Niccolò Castiglioni with conductor Michael Tilson Thomas.
Previously she directed, designed and created video for Marco Polo by Tan Dun (Bergen National Opera), concerts of Webern, Conlon Nancarrow and New York Minimalists for the London Sinfonietta, Verklarchte Nacht by Schönberg for the Musikkollegium Winterthur, Switzerland and Gävle Symphony Orchestra; Les Illuminations (Scottish Ensemble) Before Life and After, Cheltenham & Aldeburgh Festivals; Alfred, by Arne, and Partenope (Royal Opera House, Linbury); Handel’s Susanna and Flavio (Queen Elizabeth Hall/Early Opera Company);
She has created site-specific multimedia performances with large scale projection mapping including Everlasting Light, and The Way to the Sea (Aldeburgh Festival);Cross Currents at Tilbury Docks; an installation around Messiaen’s Louange a L’Eternite de Jesus (South Bank Centre, London) and has made film for films for concerts to the work of Schoenberg, Berg, Purcell, Stravinsky, Handel, Bartok, Britten, Blow, Dowland, Berio and Couperin; O Let me Weep, (Opera North);
Future projects include a new production of Atthis by Georg Frederich Haas for the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London, Les Illuminations with Daniel Harding for the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra and a new staged production of Hans Zender’s orchestral interpretation of Schuberts Winterreise with Ian Bostridge at the Barbican Theatre.
