Baritone PAUL LAROSA (Maximilian / Captain) currently is a member of the Ryan Opera Center of the Lyric Opera of Chicago. During the 2010 / 2011 season he makes his debut with the Los Angeles Philharmonic in this evening’s concert presentation at the Hollywood Bowl of Bernstein’s Candide, conducted by Bramwell Tovey, and celebrates his European debut in performances of Brahms’ Ein deutsches Requiem under the baton of Lorin Maazel with the Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana. For his debut with the Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, LaRosa sings the roles of Rambo / Officer in John Adams’ The Death of Klinghoffer directed by James Robinson and conducted by Michael Christie and returns to the stage of the Lyric Opera of Chicago as Moralès in Carmen conducted by Alain Altinoglu.
Paul LaRosa’s performances of the past season included his Lyric Opera of Chicago debut performing Kuligin in Káta Kabanová, conducted by Markus Stenz, and the role of Cascada in The Merry Widow, conducted by Emmanuel Villaume. He bowed as Dandini in Ryan Opera Center performances of La cenerentola and returned to the Castleton Festival to sing the role of Don Quijote in Falla’s Master Peter’s Puppet Show under the baton of Lorin Maazel.
A recent graduate of the Juilliard Opera Center, LaRosa appeared there in numerous productions singing such diverse roles as Adam Ochsenschwanz in Krenek’s Die Ehre der Nation under James Conlon, Ford in Verdi’s Falstaff in a production by Stephen Wadsworth conducted by Keri-Lynn Wilson, Rambo in Adams’ The Death of Klinghoffer under the baton of the composer, and Raimbaud in Rossini’s Le Comte Ory. He has been heard as Junius in Britten’s The Rape of Lucretia for the Chateauville Foundation under the baton of Lorin Maazel and as Curio in Handel’s Giulio Cesare at Glimmerglass Opera as a member of their Young American Artists Program. He also has performed Dandini in Rossini’s La cenerentola during a summer residency with the San Francisco Opera Merola Program. Operatic roles in his repertoire include Figaro in Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia, Count Almaviva in Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro, Agamemnon (Iphigénie en Aulide), Guglielmo (Così fan tutte), Nick Shadow (The Rake’s Progress), Marcello (La bohème), Don Giovanni (Don Giovanni), Silvio (I Pagliacci), Balthazaar (Amahl and the Night Visitors), the Black Cat (L’enfant et les sortilèges), and Harlekin (Ariadne auf Naxos), which he has performed with the Juilliard Opera Center, the Juilliard Opera Theatre, the Juilliard Opera Workshop, the Ryan Opera Center, the Chautauqua Institute of Music, Queens College, Weston Opera Theatre, and the New Opera Company. Paul LaRosa also has performed with Steven Blier under the auspices of the New York Festival of Song.
