NORMAN LEBRECHT is a prolific cultural commentator and an award-winning novelist.

His twelve books about music have been translated into 17 languages. The latest is Why Mahler?, a radical new interpretation of the most influential composer of modern times. Others include the international bestseller The Maestro Myth (1991), Who Killed Classical Music (1997) and The Complete Companion to Classical Music (2000).

Norman Lebrecht's first novel The Song of Names won a Whitbread Award in 2003. His second, The Game of Opposites, was published in the US by Pantheon Books. A third is in preparation.

A collection of Lebrecht columns has just been published in China, the first such anthology by any western cultural writer.

Every summer during the BBC Proms Mr Lebrecht presents The Lebrecht Interview on BBC Radio 3 with leading musical personalities. In New York, he presents The Record Doctor on WNYC. He is presently making a three-part documentary on Music and the Jews.
