About this Artist
MICHELLE LOU is a composer and sound artist currently living in Italy as a fellow at the American Academy in Rome. Much of her work utilizes analog and digital processing, feedback, bluetooth speakers, and transducers. Quite often, she writes for hardware electronics to take advantage of the warmth and volatility of electricity during a live performance. Recently, she taught courses in composition and electronic music at Dartmouth College, New Hampshire. She received degrees in composition and double bass performance from UC San Diego and Stanford University, with further studies at the Conservatorio G. Nicolini in Piacenza, Italy and at the UDK Graz in Austria with a Fulbright Fellowship. Michelle was also a fellow at The Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Studies at Harvard University. In 2012, she won First Prize for string quartet from Finale/MakeMusic and the American Composers Forum for the JACK Quartet. She has had her music presented at festivals such as Wien Modern, Donaueschinger Musiktage, MATA Festival in NYC, Bludenzer Tage zeitgemäßer Musik, The Festival for American Music at the National Gallery, LA Philʼs Noon to Midnight, Darmstadt Ferienkurse, BIFEM Australia, Chance and Circumstance in Brooklyn, amongst others.
