After fighting in the Russian Civil War as a teenager, Mosolov studied at the Moscow Conservatory with Glière and Miaskovsky, among others. He composed prolifically in his 20s, in a modern style that included experiments such as his famous use of a metal sheet in The Iron Foundry. After coming under severe criticism, he abandoned many elements of his style in favor of simpler music, often based on folk songs, which he collected throughout the Soviet Union.
