Matthew Aucoin

Starting in the fall of 2016, composer-conductor MATTHEW AUCOIN will be Artist in Residence at Los Angeles Opera, where he will conduct several pieces annually, including his own music.

In the current season, Aucoin plays the premiere of Merrill Songs, co-commissioned by Carnegie Hall and Wigmore Hall, at Carnegie Hall with tenor Paul Appleby; he also conducts the premiere of his orchestral piece Evidence with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, and violinist Jennifer Koh premieres his solo violin piece resolve at the New York Philharmonic Biennale and the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival. This season, Aucoin has also made conducting debuts with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, where he is a Dudamel Fellow; Music Academy of the West (The Bartered Bride and his own opera Second Nature); and the Teatro Petruzzelli in Bari, Italy (Le nozze di Figaro).

In the 2014/15 season, Aucoin conducted the premieres of two of his operas: Crossing, at Boston’s American Repertory Theater, and the chamber opera Second Nature, at Lyric Opera of Chicago. His cello-bass duet Dual was premiered by Yo-Yo Ma and Alexander Hanna at Chicago’s Symphony Center; and Zurich’s Tonhalle Orchestra gave the European premiere of his orchestral piece This Same Light. In recent seasons, Aucoin has conducted the Chicago Symphony, the Rome Opera Orchestra, and Juilliard Opera. In future seasons, he will return to the Chicago Symphony and make debuts in Leipzig, Salzburg, and Santa Fe, among others.

Aucoin is currently at work on a new opera for the Metropolitan Opera’s New Works program. He is a graduate of Harvard College (summa cum laude) and the recipient of a graduate diploma from the Juilliard School.
