About this Artist
ANDREW ROBINSON, who was named as the 1997 Australian Broadcasting Corporation's Westfield Young Conductor of the Year, received his first musical training as a flautist in Sydney and Camberra before turning his attentions to conducting in 1994. He has risen rapidly to the forefront of the youngest generation of Australian conductors, and in 1998 made his first appearances with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, touring with them in March. He has also performed with the State Orchestra of Victoria, the Queensland Symphony, and the Willoughby Symphony, with whom he has developed an ongoing relationship. From 1995-96, Andrew Robinson was musical director of the Australian National University Choral Society in Canberra, conducting a wide variety of major choral and orchestral works. He also performed regularly as director of the Canberra Youth Singers, and as assistant conductor of the Canberra Youth Orchestra and the Llewellyn Choir. With ensembles drawn from the Canberra School of Music he gave numerous premiere performances, including works by Larry Sitsky and Craig Charlton. He also directs the UTS Musical Society, Sydney.
In February 1998, Andrew was invited to Carnegie Hall, New York, as one of nine young conductors from around the globe to participate in the Sibelius Academy Conductors Workshop. Subsequently he performed there with the Sibelius Academy Symphony Orchestra of Finland, sharing the program with Esa-Pekka Salonen. He has also been invited to take up a Conducting Fellowship at the 1998 Tanglewood Music Festival, studying with Jorma Panula, Seji Ozawa and Andre Previn. Other teachers have included David Porcelijn, Noarn Sherriff and Max McBride.
As past winner of the Australian Flute Competition, Andrew also continues to be active as a flautist in Sydney.
