An advocate for young performers, he conducted a highly acclaimed performance of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 with one of the great youth orchestras from the famous El Sistema in Caracas, Venezuela. Regardless of his role on stage, his driving intensity and flawless control mark him as a true master of music.

In February 2000 he was presented with the Grand Cross of Isabel la Católica, Spain’s highest national honor, and was knighted Sir Angel Romero in recognition of his astounding musical accomplishments. In 2007, Angel Romero received the Recording Academy President’s Merit Award from the Recording Academy, which produces the Grammys, for his musical contributions and professional career achievements.

One of the highlights of his 2014/2015 season is an appearance with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at Walt Disney Concert Hall under the baton of Gustavo Dudamel. Romero made his debut with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the age of 16, performing Joaquín Rodrigo’s famed Concierto de Aranjuez. He grew up under the tutelage of the great composer, and together they worked on a special project, the concerto Rincones de España, which Romero composed based on themes that Rodrigo collected and dedicated to him. More than celebrating the dances of Spain’s different regions, the piece is a true labor of love and the composers’ combined tributes to each other. Rodrigo’s dedication of the themes reads: “Through my artistic life I have collected a few popular themes from my country. I have given them to Angel Romero and he has proceeded to put pen to paper in the way that only an artist of his great caliber can do.” Romero in turn writes, “This concerto I hold very dear to my heart since it fuses all the times in my youth and young adulthood that I was fortunate, both as a musician and a human being, to have spent so many intimate times with Joaquín Rodrigo. This piece seals my love, admiration, and friendship for him.”
