About this Artist

Conductor MATTHIAS BAMERT's reputation in the big Romantic repertoire, his championship of new music, and his innovative programming have garnered international praise. He has been Director of the prestigious Lucerne Festival since 1992 and Music Director of the London Mozart Players, Britain's longest established chamber orchestra, since the 1993/1994 season.

Bamert's conducting career began as an apprentice to George Szell and later as Leopold Stokowski's assistant. Posts have included Resident Conductor/Cleveland Orchestra, Music Director/Swiss Radio Orchestra (1977-83), and Principal Guest Conductor/Scottish National Orchestra (1985-90).

Although Swiss, Bamert has lived in London since 1987. He works regularly with the London Philharmonic, The Philharmonia and the BBC Symphony and appears each year at the Proms. In 1995/1996 guest engagements took him to Europe, USA, Canada, Australia and the Far East with orchestras such as the Oslo Philharmonic, Swedish Radio Symphony, Zurich's Tonhalle Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Detroit Symphony and the Montreal Symphony.

Recent recordings for Chandos Records include the complete symphonies of Hubert Parry, five discs of Frank Martin's works with the London Philharmonic, and Stokowski transcriptions and Korngold symphonies with the BBC Philharmonic. An acclaimed "Contemporaries of Mozart" series (London Mozart Players) so far includes symphonies by Clementi, Krommer, Stamitz and Michael Haydn.
