Helene Siebrits

About this Artist

HELENE SIEBRITS is an Associate Professor of Costume Design and Head of the Costume Program at Ohio University. Helene is thrilled to be a creative member of the Los Angeles Philharmonic production of Stravinsky’s Perséphone. Over the years Helene has designed and created costumes for a wide range of genres including contemporary plays, musicals, Shakespeare plays, opera, film, and dance.

In 2017, with fellowship support from Ohio University, Helene worked with Amrita Performing Arts Artistic Director and choreographer Chey Chankethya on a new dance narrative that was staged in Hong Kong. Helene’s designs for Monkey have been selected for the Scenofest exhibit at the June 2019 Prague Quadrennial in the Czech Republic. Helene continues to pursue fellowship support for the investigation of the performing arts in Cambodia. Her goal is to bring new Cambodian and Cambodian-American narratives to the stage.

Over the past decade, Helene has collaborated with opera director Peter Sellars on several productions including Oedipus Rex and Symphony of Psalms (Stravinsky) at the Baltic Sea Festival in Stockholm, the Royal Festival Hall in London, and the Festival International d’Art Lyrique d’Aix en Provence. Helene has also collaborated with Sellars on the double-bill production of Iolanta/Perséphone (Tchaikovsky/Stravinsky) for the Festival International d’Art Lyrique d’Aix en Provence and the Teatro Real in Madrid. Helene has previously worked with Peter Sellars’ creative team on productions staged at the Metropolitan Opera of New York, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, La Salle Pleyel in Paris, the Sydney Opera House, the Luzerner Theatre in Switzerland, and Santa Fe Opera.

Helene’s design aesthetic is informed by a deep understanding of bespoke costume construction. The costumes for the Los Angeles Philharmonic production of Stravinsky’s Perséphone were designed and built in her studio.

Helene received her MFA in Design from the UCLA School of Theatre, Film, and Television.  She is a member of United Scenic Artists Local 829, New York and an active member of the United States Institute of Theatre Technology/Organisation Internationale des Scénographes, Techniciens et Architectes de Théâtre.
