Mezzo-soprano JANNA BATY enjoys an unusually versatile career. Recent engagements include appearances with the Hamburgische Staatsoper, L'Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse, the Boston Lyric Opera, Opera North, Eugene Opera, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Brooklyn Philharmonic, the Yale Symphony, the Tallahassee Symphony, the Hartford Symphony, and the Orquesta Filarmónica de Bogotá (Colombia), and at Carnegie Hall. She has sung under conductors Seiji Ozawa, Michel Plasson, Carl Davis, Robert Spano, Steuart Bedford, and Christopher Lyndon Gee, among others. She has appeared with the Aldeburgh and Britten Festivals in England, the "Semanas Musicales de Frutillar" Festival in Chile, the Varna Summer Festival in Bulgaria, and the Tanglewood, Norfolk, Rockport, and Coastal Carolina festivals in the U.S. Her opera roles range from the Duchess in Thomas Adès' Powder Her Face, to Alice Ford in Falstaff, to Dinah in Trouble in Tahiti, running the gamut from dramatic soprano to dramatic mezzo. Equally at home in standard or contemporary repertory, she appears regularly with such noted contemporary ensembles as Collage New Music, Auros Group for New Music, and Boston Modern Orchestra Project, and has worked alongside many composers, including Bernard Rands, Eric Salzman, and John Harbison, on performances of their music. Winner of several international competitions, most notably the XXI Concurso Internacional de Ejecución Musical "Dr. Luis Sigall" in Viña del Mar, Chile, she has given concerts across Europe, the U.S., and South America, and is a co-director of both Music at St. George's, a Manhattan-based vocal chamber music series, and of Auros Group for New Music in Boston. She can be heard on the critically acclaimed recordings Griffelkin (by Lukas Foss, Chandos, 2003); and Vali: Flute Concerto/Deylaman/Folk Songs No. 10 (Naxos, 2004), on which she sings orchestral songs in Persian by Iranian composer, Reza Vali.
