About this Artist

Bassist and composer JIMMY BOND, a Philadelphia native, attended the Juilliard School in New York, while simultaneously playing a steady gig at the Blue Note club. After graduating in 1955, he immediately joined Chet Baker’s band. Gigs soon followed with Ella Fitzgerald, Buddy DeFranco, Sonny Rollins, Carmen McRae, and George Shearing, with whom he went on tour for two years. Bond settled in Los Angeles in 1959 where he teamed with Ben Webster, Art Pepper, Jim Hall, and Jimmy Guiffre at the Renaissance Club. With LA as home base, he has performed, recorded, and toured with Chet Baker, Charles Brown, Paul Horn, Randy Newman, Lou Rawls, Nina Simone, and Nancy Wilson, among others. Bond also played bass on the original soundtrack recording of The Color Purple.
