About this Artist
Alexandria Shiner is a Grand Finals Winner of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions (now known as the Eric and Dominique Laffont Competition) and continues to garner critical acclaim for her “blazing soprano” (The Wall Street Journal).
Shiner’s 2023/24 season is highlighted by returns to the Lyric Opera of Chicago for Der fliegende Holländer and a debut with the Cleveland Orchestra for a fully staged production of Die Zauberflöte (First Lady) under the baton of Franz Welser-Möst. Future engagements include a return to the Metropolitan Opera.
Last season, Alexandria returned to Washington National Opera for a new production of Elektra (Fourth Maid and Trainbearer) directed by Francesca Zambello and the Metropolitan Opera for the new Simon McBurney production of Die Zauberflöte (First Lady) conducted by Nathalie Stutzmann. She also debuted with Arizona Opera in The Sound of Music (Mother Abbess) and also joined the roster of the Lyric Opera of Chicago for Ernani.
Alexandria is a recent graduate of the Cafritz Young Artist Program at Washington National Opera, where she was seen in The Magic Flute (First Lady), The Consul (Magda), Don Carlo (Celestial Voice), the world premiere of Kamala Sankaram’s Taking Up Serpents (Kayla), and the title role in Handel’s Alcina. Additional performances include the North American premiere of Liszt’s unfinished opera Sardanapalo (Mirra), the title role in Ariadne auf Naxos with Wolf Trap Opera, and Il barbiere di Siviglia (Berta) with WNO and the Glimmerglass Festival. Concert appearances included Florent Schmitt’s Psaume XLVII with the Choral Arts Society of Washington.
