About this Piece

I composed Civilizaciones in 1983 (rev. 2000) for percussion instruments, with optional electronics. The piece has three parts, resembling some of civilization's evolutive theories: (1) "Organization," (2) "Structuration," and (3) "Transcendence or Destruction," each one with a different character, aesthetic proposal, musical technique, and notation approach. The organization that leads to a primary order, evolves to a gradually more complex structuration, representing the impulse civilizations have to transcend to an upper life stage or to self-destruction. This idea represents the generative nucleus of the composition and its micro/macro characteristics.
