About this Piece

A member of the Formalist Quartet, violinist and violist Andrew McIntosh also plays French Baroque music and the scordatura violin music of Biber. As a composer, he “strives to write vibrant and compelling pieces while bringing a spirit of experimentalism to the music, usually through working with just intonation and frequency ratios,” according to his website.

McIntosh wrote Silver and White for sound installation artist Chris Kallmyer, and it was premiered by wild Up in March 2012. The piece explores very precisely calibrated microtonal intervals in slithery glissandos and unmeasured descending scales, at very soft levels; the four pitched instruments are muted and the sustained snare rolls “should be as quiet as humanly possible.”
