Fellini's La dolce vita (1961), starring Marcello Mastroianni, is a fanciful film about "nothing." Mastroianni plays a society writer caught up in the parties and superficial life of the rich and hangers-on in Rome's high society. Rota's much-copied theme captures the fleeting and shallow pleasure of "the sweet life."
