About this Piece

Richard D. James (aka Aphex Twin) threw Minimalism onto hot coals in the 1980s, melding ambient sounds to a techno pulse. By the time of Drukqs, however, his music had calmed itself down. There are few Minimalists who can resist flirting with Satie at some point in their lives. And James is no exception. Drukqs has 13 tracks for piano. Most fuse the color of John Cage’s prepared piano pieces with the narrative flatness of Erik Satie. Two of the finest are April 14th, which loops on a catchy little melody, and Nanou2, which ambles a little more dreamily across the registers, a thin melody just about making its presence felt in the ether.
