  • ANGÉLIQUE KIDJO TO MAKE HER WALT DISNEY CONCERT HALL

DEBUT AS PART OF THE LA PHIL’S 2009/10 WORLD MUSIC SERIES
  • Feb. 28, 2010

Presented in association with 89.9 KCRW

The electrifying West African, New York-based vocalist Angélique Kidjo will make her debut at Walt Disney Concert Hall on Sunday, February 28th, 2010, in support of her latest project, Oyo, due for release on March 30, 2010. In the course of her successful career, Kidjo has spread her rhythmic Afro-funk fusion to the four corners of the globe. Her fun-loving personality, on-stage charisma and unique voice make her live performances joyous and uplifting affairs.

Kidjo has been deemed “Africa’s premier diva” by Time magazine, and the moniker speaks accurately to the singular career and life she has forged. Like the great Miriam Makeba before her, Kidjo is the continent’s most internationally celebrated female musical exponent. Kidjo’s work has garnered four Grammy nominations, and has cross-pollinated the West African traditions of her childhood in Benin with elements of American R&B, funk and jazz, as well as influences from Europe and Latin America.

On her new album, Oyo, Kidjo returns to her roots to interpret the music that inspired her growing up in Benin. With a host of friends and collaborators, including John Legend, Lionel Loueke, Carlos Santana, Roy Hargrove, Christian McBride and Antibalas, Kidjo takes on Curtis Mayfield's "Move On Up," Otis Redding's "I’ve Got Dreams to Remember," Santana's "Samba Pa Ti," Aretha Franklin’s "Baby I Love You," and James Brown's "Cold Sweat." Kidjo also revisits the Beninese traditional music of her native country, as well as songs from Hollywood and Bollywood films.

The Los Angeles Philharmonic’s 2009/10 World Music Series concludes with Hawaii’s popular and multi-talented performer Keali’i Reichel on March 19, 2010.
