  • LEGENDARY VOCAL IMPROVISER BOBBY McFERRIN RETURNS TO WALT DISNEY CONCERT HALL WITH LATEST PROJECT SPIRITYOUALL
  • Mar. 26, 2013
  • WEDNESDAY, APRIL 3, 2013, AT 8 PM

    WHAT:
The unparalleled vocal improviser and ten-time Grammy winner Bobby McFerrin returns to Walt Disney Concert Hall to present his newest project spirityouall on April 3, 2013. The program features selections from his latest album of the same name, available on May 14, 2013 from Sony Masterworks.

On spirityouall Bobby McFerrin invites us to sit on the stoop awhile and listen as he throws some unexpected new ingredients into the melting pot and reinvents Americana. He embraces it all — bluegrass and the baroque, heartfelt lyrics and wordless melodies, joy and sorrow —across genres, across boundaries, across generations. He invites us back to the great folk tradition of lifting our voices to sing together through life’s trials and triumphs.

The program features seven classic spirituals, an unexpected cover (Bob Dylan’s “I Shall Be Released”), and five original tunes ranging from a celebratory hoedown (“Rest”) to a polemic anthem, to a down and dirty blues setting of Psalm 25:15. spirityouall honors the legacy of Bobby’s father, the opera singer Robert McFerrin, Sr., the first African-American to sign a contract with the Metropolitan Opera Company and a renowned interpreter of the American Negro spiritual.

Bobby McFerrin is critically praised for his one-of-a-kind, impressive technique. Despite the undeniable uniqueness of his gift, McFerrin’s music is always accessible and inviting. When he invites his fans to sing along, as he almost always does, few can resist. Inclusiveness, play, and the universality of voices raised together in song are at the heart of Bobby’s art. Bobby McFerrin was exposed to a multitude of musical genres during his youth – classical, R&B, jazz, pop and world music. McFerrin continues to explore the musical universe, known and unknown. Drawing on all genres, demonstrating matchless improvisational skills, he never fails to dazzle. He never seems to run out of new ideas, and he loves having no clue what’s going to happen next. Ask him where he went to school, and he just might tell you that he is a graduate of MSU: Making Stuff Up.
