  • LEILA JOSEFOWICZ PERFORMS STRAVINSKY’S VIOLIN CONCERTO WITH THE LOS ANGELES PHILHARMONIC LED BY SUSANNA MÄLKKI
  • Apr. 3, 2013
  • FRIDAY AND SATURDAY, APRIL 12 AND 13, 2013, AT 8 PM
    SUNDAY, APRIL 14, 2013, AT 2 PM

WHAT:       Finnish conductor Susanna Mälkki leads the Los Angeles Philharmonic in three performances at Walt Disney Concert Hall, Friday and Saturday, April 12 and 13, at 8 pm, and Sunday, April 14, at 2 pm. She is joined by gifted violinist Leila Josefowicz performing Stravinsky’s Violin Concerto, the composer’s neo classical masterwork composed in 1931. All three dates also include Brahms’ Fourth Symphony and the Saturday and Sunday programs feature the U.S. premiere of Enno Poppe’s Markt.

The Friday concert is part of the LA Phil’s Casual Fridays series, which features a shorter program, is presented without intermission and encourages audience members to attend in comfortable attire. These Casual Fridays concerts also feature a free TalkBack discussion with musicians, held on stage after the performance, and a chance to mingle with members of the orchestra in the Concert Hall Café.

Susanna Mälkki is a much sought-after artist on the international conducting circuit; her versatility and broad repertoire have taken her to symphony orchestras, chamber orchestras, contemporary music ensembles and opera houses throughout the world. She was, until recently, Music Director of the Ensemble InterContemporain. This season sees Mälkki work with the ORF Radio-Symphonieorchester Wien, Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg, SWR Sinfonieorchester Baden-Baden und Freiburg, and Netherlands Radio Philharmonic orchestras. In North America, she gives performances with the Detroit, New World and New Jersey symphony orchestras. Further ahead, she returns to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. In April 2011, she made her debut at La Scala, Milan – the first woman to do so in the opera house’s prestigious history – and has already been invited to return (in January 2014). In spring 2010, she conducted the world premiere of a ballet by Bruno Mantovani at Opéra national de Paris, and she will conduct two productions there in the 2013/14 season. A former student at the Sibelius Academy, Mälkki studied with Jorma Panula and Leif Segerstam. Prior to her conducting studies, she had a successful career as a cellist and from 1995 to 1998 she was one of the principals of the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra in Sweden. In June 2010, she was elected a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music in London and she is also a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music. In 2011, Mälkki was awarded the Pro Finlandia Medal of the Order of the Lion of Finland, one of Finland’s highest honors.

One of the active violinists of her generation and an outstanding champion of contemporary music, Leila Josefowicz is the chosen interpreter of several of today's leading composers and has premiered concertos written for her by Esa-Pekka Salonen/Los Angeles Philharmonic, Steven Mackey/St. Louis Symphony and Colin Matthews/City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, and played first performances of Thomas Adès' violin concerto Concentric Paths with the Philadelphia and Cleveland Orchestras, the San Francisco, Toronto and Seattle symphonies and at the Aspen Music Festival. In recognition of her passionate advocacy and genuine commitment to the music of today, Josefowicz was awarded a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship. John Adams and Luca Francesconi have been commissioned to write new concertos for her. Josefowicz has released many recordings, notably for the Deutsche Grammophon, Philips/Universal and Warner Classics labels. Recent recordings include John Adams' Violin Concerto and The Dharma at Big Sur with the Los Angeles Philharmonic for DG Concerts on iTunes, and her recording of his Road Movies for Nonesuch received a Grammy nomination. Her latest recording, released by Deutsche Grammophon in the fall of 2012, features Esa-Pekka Salonen's Violin Concerto with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by the composer. A recipient of the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant in 1994 as well as a 2007 United States Artists Cummings Fellowship, Leila Josefowicz is a graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music where she studied with Jaime Laredo and Jascha Brodsky.
