  • ST. THOMAS THE APOSTLE CHURCH
    MONDAY, MAY 13, 2013, AT 8 PM

Leadership support for the LA Phil’s Education and Community Programs is provided by the Peggy Bergmann YOLA Endowment Fund, the Lee and Hope Landis Warner YOLA Student Fund, Norma D. Kayser Trust, Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts and Rose Hills Foundation. Additional support for Neighborhood Concerts is provided by the James Irvine Foundation and Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors through the Los Angeles County Arts Commission

The Los Angeles Philharmonic and St. Thomas the Apostle Church present a free neighborhood chamber concert featuring LA Phil members Mitchell Newman, violin; Camille Avellano, violin; Ingrid Hutman, viola; Jason Lippmann, cello; and YOLA at HOLA students performing works by Mozart, Bach and Dvořák.

YOLA at HOLA musicians first played a side-by-side concert with LA Phil musicians just months after the site opened in 2010.  These side-by-sides have occurred yearly since then, marking the consistent progress of YOLA student musicians and representing the ongoing, valuable interactions between YOLA students and LA Phil musicians.  LA Phil musicians enhance YOLA programming through teaching and performance opportunities at YOLA sites.

The Los Angeles Philharmonic’s neighborhood concerts in the community include free orchestra, chamber music and jazz concerts in churches, community centers and other local venues around Southern California.  The Los Angeles Philharmonic has been presenting free neighborhood concerts for over 20 years, as part of the organization’s dedication to making music accessible to the widest possible audience.

St. Thomas the Apostle Church is located in the Pico Union neighborhood of Los Angeles. Admission to the neighborhood concert is free, and no tickets are required. More information may be obtained by calling the church at 323.737.3325. Free parking is available at 2727 West Pico Blvd. and at the corner of 15th Street and Mariposa.

    Youth Orchestra Los Angeles (YOLA):

Through Gustavo Dudamel's Youth Orchestra LA (YOLA) program – inspired by Venezuela's revolutionary El Sistema – the LA Phil and its community partners provide free instruments, intensive music training, and academic support to students from underserved neighborhoods, enabling every child to contribute using their full potential.

The EXPO Center Youth Orchestra, the first project of YOLA, opened in fall 2007, and is a partnership between the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Harmony Project, and the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks. The program is comprised of children ages 2–17 who live within a 5-mile radius of the EXPO Center and represent more than 60 public, charter, and private schools in South LA. The YOLA program at EXPO Center, part of Exposition Park in South L.A., has grown to include three orchestras, mentorship, group lessons, chamber music and parent ensembles. The program serves hundreds of students who attend four days each week. In addition, students perform annually at Walt Disney Concert Hall and have appeared multiple times on the iconic stage of the Hollywood Bowl.

YOLA at HOLA, the second project of YOLA, opened in fall 2010, and is a full, cost-sharing partnership of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Heart of Los Angeles (HOLA). The partners share program design, management and financial responsibilities for the program, and each organization is responsible for raising funds to support its own portion of the program’s costs. Located in the Rampart District, YOLA at HOLA serves hundreds of students with intensive after-school orchestral instruction five days a week. Classes include music creativity, singing and solfège, ensemble rehearsals, and an hour of academic tutoring daily. This holistic approach fosters a sense of community and provides the students with the opportunity to take advantage of HOLA's exceptional programs and resources.

HOLA's youth orchestra program is made possible by the Weingart Foundation, the Ziering Family Foundation, the W.M. Keck Foundation, the Clarence E. Heller Charitable Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Rosenthal Family Foundation, the Jerry & Terri Kohl Family Foundation, the Flora L. Thornton Foundation, the Colburn Foundation, the Philip and Muriel Berman Foundation, the Walt Disney Company, the CAA Foundation, and the Thomas and Dana Riccard Family.
