WHAT: The 2013/14 Jazz Series at Walt Disney Concert Hall begins on November 22, 2013 with Ramsey Lewis and Dee Dee Bridgewater presenting “The Soul of Jazz.” The concert will feature some of their favorite soul songs, such as “Use Me Up,” “Nightmoves,” and “Stitched Up.”
The 2013/14 series welcomes to Walt Disney Concert Hall today’s jazz greats in four distinct concerts, including a special show that celebrates the 10th anniversary of the Walt Disney Concert Hall, bringing together former Creative Chairs for Jazz Dianne Reeves and Christian McBride and current Chair Herbie Hancock. After opening with Lewis and Bridgewater, the series features two very special jazz anniversaries – the 60th year of the Newport Jazz Festival and Jazz at Massey Hall – celebrated in a single night with an all-star lineup; and the series concludes with the dazzling technique of instrumentalists Joshua Redman and Brad Mehldau.
Herbie Hancock’s tenure in his position as the Carolyn and Bill Powers Creative Chair for Jazz for the Los Angeles Philharmonic – which began in the summer of 2010 – currently runs through the Hollywood Bowl 2014 season and the 2014/15 winter season at Walt Disney Concert Hall.

Two landmark jazz occasions, one historic night! Celebrating the “grandfather of all jazz festivals,” today’s top musicians honor the first jazz festival in American, its innovative programming and its rich heritage. Opening the evening, we pay tribute to one of the greatest bebop concerts of all time: Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Bud Powell and Max Roach at Massey Hall, Toronto, 1953.

JOSHUA REDMAN QUARTET
BRAD MEHLDAU TRIO
A night of cerebral explorations and improvisations that burst with color and angularity: Mehldau opens with inventive re-workings of standards and pop songs in his volatile rhythmic style. Tenor saxophonist Redman and his quartet are ambitious, technically brilliant and adventurous in their musical storytelling.
