WHAT:       Conductor/composer and new music specialist Brad Lubman leads the LA Phil New Music Group in a concert featuring Johannes Moser performing the West Coast premiere of Michel van der Aa’s 2013 Grawemeyer Award-winning Up-close at Walt Disney Concert Hall, Tuesday, January 28, at 8 pm. The program presents van der Aa’s multimedia cello concerto, which combines traditional concerto dynamics and video opera, along with with Pierre Boulez’ Éclat and Elliott Carter’s Triple Duo. The concert is the third LA Phil Green Umbrella performance of the 2013/14 season.

Remaining concerts for the Green Umbrella series are: a Minimalist Jukebox Festival concert featuring the Calder Quartet performing Steve Reich’s Different Trains and John Adams conducting world premieres from Missy Mazzoli and Mark Grey (April 8, 2014); and Jeffrey Milarsky leading the New Music Group in Harrison Birtwistle’s Three Settings of Celan, Messiaen’s Oiseaux exotiques featuring Ralph von Raat, and Lindberg’s Joy (May 6, 2014).

Brad Lubman is founding co-Artistic Director and Music Director of Ensemble Signal, hailed by The New York Times as “one of the most vital groups of its kind.” Since his conducting debut in 1984, he has gained widespread recognition for his versatility, commanding technique, and insightful interpretations. Lubman’s guest conducting engagements include major orchestras such as the DSO Berlin, the Netherlands Radio Kamer Filharmonie, the WDR Symphony Cologne, the Cracow Philharmonic, the Bavarian Radio Orchestra (Bayerischen Rundfunks), the Stuttgart Radio Symphony, the Dresden Philharmonic, the Deutschland Radio Philharmonie, the American Composers Orchestra, and the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, performing repertoire ranging from classical to contemporary orchestral works. He has worked with some of the most important ensembles for contemporary music, including the London Sinfonietta, Ensemble Modern, Klangforum Wien, musikFabrik, the Los Angeles Philharmonic New Music Group, and Steve Reich and Musicians. Lubman has recorded for Albany, BMG/RCA, Bridge, Cantaloupe, CRI, Kairos, Koch, Mode, New World, Nonesuch, Orange Mountain, and Tzadik. Lubman’s own compositions have been performed in the U.S. and Europe and can be heard on his CD, insomniac, on Tzadik. Lubman has been Associate Professor of Conducting and Ensembles at the Eastman School of Music since 1997, where he directs the Musica Nova ensemble, and is on the faculty of the Bang-on-a-Can Summer Institute.

Two-time winner of the ECHO Klassik award, cellist Johannes Moser has been described as a “world leader in his field,” since his brilliant debut with the Berliner Philharmoniker under Zubin Mehta in September 2011. Moser has performed with the world’s leading orchestras and works regularly with conductors such as Riccardo Muti, Lorin Maazel, Mariss Jansons, Valery Gergiev, Zubin Mehta, Vladimir Jurowski, Franz Welser-Möst, Manfred Honeck, Christian Thielemann, Pierre Boulez, Paavo Jarvi and Semyon Bychkov. His affinity for new music has brought him much attention from leading conductors such as Pierre Boulez, who invited him to make his U.S. debut with the Chicago Symphony on the Rands Concerto. Moser is an enthusiastic advocate for the electric cello and in October 2011, premiered Magnetar, a concerto for electric cello by Enrico Chapela with the Los Angeles Philharmonic conducted by Gustavo Dudamel. Born in Munich in 1979, the son of a renowned German-Canadian family of musicians, he began playing the cello at the age of 8, and studied with David Geringas. In 2002, he won the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow and also received a special prize for his interpretation of the Rococo Variations. Moser plays a cello by Andrea Guarneri of 1694 from a private collection.
