    Thursday & Saturday, January 16 & 18 at 8 PM and

Sunday, January 19 at 2:30 PM

Esa-Pekka Salonen leads the Philharmonic in the world premiere of William Kraft's Concerto for English horn and orchestra, The Grand Encounter, on January 16 & 18 at 8 p.m., and January 19 at 2:30 p.m. Philharmonic English hornist Carolyn Hove is the soloist, continuing the Philharmonic's season-long emphasis on featuring its members in the spotlight. The concert also includes Wagner's Prelude to Die Meistersinger and Schumann's Symphony No. 3, "Rhenish."

Upbeat Live, a free pre-concert discussion featuring composer/conductor/flutist Daniel Kessner interviewing Kraft, takes place one hour before each performance in the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion's Grand Hall.

William Kraft was a member of the Philharmonic for 26 years - eight as a percussionist and 18 more as principal timpanist. He was also assistant conductor of the orchestra and founded the Los Angeles Philharmonic New Music Group. His Concerto for English Horn and Orchestra, The Grand Encounter, was commissioned by the Philharmonic and written especially for the Los Angeles Philharmonic's English horn player, Carolyn Hove. This is a follow-up to Encounters XI, a work for English horn and percussion he composed for Hove and the orchestra's principal percussionist, Raynor Carroll, which premiered in 1999.

ESA-PEKKA SALONEN, the tenth conductor to head the Los Angeles Philharmonic, began his tenure as Music Director in October 1992. Salonen made his American debut conducting the Los Angeles Philharmonic in November 1984, and he has conducted the orchestra every season since. Among the many highlights of Salonen's activities with the Philharmonic have been world premieres of new works by composers John Adams, Bernard Rands, Rodion Shchedrin, Steven Stucky, and Salonen himself, well-received Ligeti and Stravinsky Festivals, appearances at the Ojai Festival, eight critically acclaimed international tours since 1992, and his extensive discography with the Philharmonic for Sony Classical. Salonen was born in Helsinki, Finland in 1958. He made his conducting debut with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra in 1979, and he has been one of the world's most sought-after conductors since his debut in London with the Philharmonia Orchestra in September 1983. He served as principal guest conductor of the Philharmonia from 1985 to 1994 and as principal conductor of the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra from 1985 to 1995.

CAROLYN HOVE joined the Los Angeles Philharmonic as solo English horn in 1988. She had previously held the position of English horn and assistant principal oboe in the San Antonio Symphony. In March of 1999, Hove performed to critical acclaim the world premiere of William Kraft's Encounters XI: The Demise of Suriyodhaya. This work was commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic and written expressly for Ms. Hove and Raynor Carroll, the orchestra's principal percussionist. Hove maintains a busy schedule as a teacher and her activities have included guest lectureships at "The American Oboist" seminars held at the University of Cincinnati Conservatory, CalArts, the University of Southern California, UCLA, the University of British Columbia, the University of Washington, the Music Academy of the West, and California State University, Northridge. She is presently a faculty member at California State University, Long Beach.
