    TIANYI LU, RUTH REINHARDT AND JONATHON HEYWARD SELECTED FOR THE LA PHIL'S 2017/18 DUDAMEL FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

    Los Angeles, CA (July 27, 2017) - The Los Angeles Philharmonic Association has announced the appointment of former Dudamel Fellow Paolo Bortolameolli as Assistant Conductor of the LA Phil for the 2017/18 season. As part of his duties, Bortolameolli will serve as the cover conductor for Gustavo Dudamel and guest conductors throughout the orchestra's subscription season and on tour. He will also conduct the Toyota Symphonies for Youth Concerts at Walt Disney Concert Hall on February 24 and March 10, 2018.    

    The Los Angeles Philharmonic Association has also announced the three conductors who will participate in the 2017/18 Dudamel Fellowship Program - Tianyi Lu, Ruth Reinhardt and Jonathon Heyward. Music & Artistic Director Gustavo Dudamel, together with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, created the Dudamel Fellowship Program in 2009 to provide a unique opportunity for promising young conductors from around the world to develop their craft and enrich their musical experience through personal mentorship and participation in the LA Phil's orchestral, education and community programs.

    "This program continues the LA Phil's commitment to supporting and training the next generation of exceptional conductors," commented Dudamel. "I am very honored to work with these young Fellows from all over the world and provide them with support in the coming season."

    The Fellows will work alongside Dudamel and musicians of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, as well as visiting artists and conductors, and will also work with students in key LA Phil education programs. The program for each of the Fellows will run separately. The Fellows will hone their skills through observation and application, such as conducting Los Angeles Philharmonic youth concerts at Walt Disney Concert Hall, participating as cover conductors, and serving as mentors themselves through participation in programs such as Youth Orchestra Los Angeles (YOLA).

    Praised by composer George Crumb for his "sensitive and insightful interpretation", conductor Paolo Bortolameolli has been gaining international attention as one of the most interesting young conductors from South America of his generation.

    Along with his musical personality, Bortolameolli brings a collaborative approach to music and a passion for connecting the 21st-century audience to the concert stage, A Dudamel Fellow for the LA Phil's 2016/17 season Bortolameolli enjoys conducting, working with youth orchestras, collaborating with today's composers, lecturing and writing.

    Bortolameolli is 2017 Guest Conductor in Residence YOA Orchestra of the America and was Semifinalist in the Mahler Competition 2016. Recently he debuted with the LA Phil in a Toyota Symphonies for Youth concert (February 2017).

    As Assistant Conductor of Yale Philharmonia, he collaborated with conductors such as, Peter Oundjian, Xu Zhong, Jahja Ling, Shinik Hahm, William Christie and Helmut Rilling.

    During the 2014/15 season he was Cover Conductor for Marin Alsop and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. He was also Principal Conductor of the New Haven Chamber Orchestra during the 2012/13 season.

    In 2013, he made his debut with the Orquesta Filarmónica de Santiago (Chile), celebrating the Centennial Anniversary of The Rite of Spring, in a performance that garnered him the Special Award from the Chilean Critics Association.

    Since then he has conducted every other major orchestra of his country, including the Orquesta Sinfónica de Chile, the Orquesta de la Universidad de Concepción, the Orquesta USACH, the Orquesta de Cámara de Chile and the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional Juvenil, among others.  

    In 2016 Bortolameolli was awarded Best Opera Conductor (arts critics from Chile) for his debut as opera conductor at Teatro Municipal de Santiago. (Tancredi, Rossini).

    He has worked with internationally renowned soloists, such as Ray Chen, Lucas Macías Navarro, Pacho Flores, Yuzuko Horigome, and Kun-Woo Paik, among others.

    In 2007, he was named among the 100 Young Leaders of the Country by the Chilean national magazine Sábado.

    Bortolameolli holds a Master of Music degree in Orchestral Conducting from the Yale School of Music (Shinik Hahm - 2013) and a Graduate Performance Diploma from the Peabody Institute (2015), where he studied under the guidance of Gustav Meier and Markand Thakar.

    He graduated from the Arts Faculty of the University of Chile (David del Pino Klinge 2011) and from the Universidad Católica de Chile, where he studied piano with Professor Frida Conn.

    The Magic of Dvorák 

    Tianyi Lu is the Assistant Conductor of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Principal Conductor of the St. Woolos Players, and regularly guests conducts orchestras around the United Kingdom and New Zealand. Recent engagements have included concerts with the RWCMD Symphony Orchestra, Bristol Metropolitan Orchestra as their formal Music Director, Manukau Symphony Orchestra and Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra Summer School. She will be assistant conductor to Carlo Montanaro on La Traviata as well as conducting a concert of Donizetti with the Dallas Opera next season, and will be making her debut with the Hallé orchestra later this year.  

    In masterclass or assistant roles, Lu has worked with conductors and ensembles including Bernard Haitink and the Lucerne Festival Strings, Sir Mark Elder and the Hallé Orchestra, Thomas Søndergård and Xian Zhang with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Carlo Rizzi with the Gulbenkian Orchestra, Carlo Montanaro and Nicole Paiement with the Dallas Opera Orchestra, Alice Farnham and Welsh National Youth Opera, Alexander Polynichko with the St. Petersburg Philharmonic, Pietari Inkinen with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, Eckehard Stier with the Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra, Marko Letonja with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, Sian Edwards with the Dartington Festival Orchestra, Kenneth Kiesler with the Berlin Sinfonietta and Christopher Seaman as part of the Symphony Services International Conducting Training Program.

    Last year, Lu was selected out of 320 applicants to attend the Lucerne Festival Masterclass with Bernard Haitink and was chosen out of a field of 150 to be an active participant at the Linda and Mitch Hart Institute for Women Conductors with the Dallas Opera. In 2014, she was voted a finalist at the twelfth Interaktion Dirigentenwerkstatt des Kritischen Orchesters by players of the Berlin Philharmonic and professional orchestras in Germany.

    Lu began conducting studies at the University of Auckland with Uwe Grodd and Karen Grylls, where she completed her Bachelor of Music with First Class Honors, before studying with John Hopkins at the University of Melbourne. She was awarded Distinction for her MMus in Orchestral Conducting at the RWCMD, studying with David Jones in 2015.

    Ruth Reinhardt earned her master's degree in conducting from The Juilliard School, where she studied with Alan Gilbert. She is currently the Assistant Conductor of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra under Music Director Jaap van Zweden. She was Associate Conducting Fellow of the Taki Concordia program with Marin Alsop and the regular conductor of New York City-based ÆON Ensemble. Reinhardt was also a Conducting Fellow with the Seattle Symphony and Tanglewood Music Center. Recently, her performances with the Musikkollegium Winterthur were made into a major broadcast on Swiss TV.

    Reinhardt gave her critically acclaimed subscription debut with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra last November, when she stepped in to replace Stanisław Skrowaczewski. Also last season, Reinhardt made debuts with the Cleveland Orchestra and the Indianapolis Symphony and led concerts with the Seattle Symphony. Later this summer, she makes her conducting debut in Scandinavia conducting the Malmö SymfoniOrkester in Sweden.

    Born in Saarbrücken, Germany, Reinhardt began her formal musical education at the age of six studying violin, and completed her studies at the Zürcher Hochschule der Künste (ZHdK) with Rudolf Koelman. Reinhardt began conducting studies in 2004, with Constantin Trinks, and continued formal studies at the ZHdk with Johannes Schlaefli and Ulrich Windfuhr. She has participated in masterclasses with Bernard Haitink, David Zinman, Michael Tilson Thomas, Paavo and Neeme Järvi, Marin Alsop and James Ross.

    As a child, Reinhardt was a member of the Children's Chorus of Saarländisches Staatstheater (Germany), which began her appreciation for opera. She has conducted performances of Die Fledermaus at the Leipzig University of the Arts, and Dvořák's Rusalka and Weber's Der Freischütz for the North Czech Opera Company. At age 17, she composed and conducted a children's opera in her hometown, and in Zürich, Reinhardt conducted the premieres of two: Die Kleine Meerjungfrau by Swiss composer Michal Muggli and Wassilissa by German composer Dennis Bäsecke.

    Jonathon Heyward is forging a career as one the most exciting conductors of his generation. He is currently Assistant Conductor of The Hallé, alongside Music Director Sir Mark Elder.

    2017/18 promises to be a busy season. In addition to strengthening his work with both The Hallé Youth Orchestra (as its Artistic Director and main conductor) and The Hallé, which he will conduct in his first subscription series concert, with soloist Benjamin Grosvenor, in March, Jonathon will also embark on a number of eclectic projects: five performances premiering Giorgio Battistelli's new opera, Lazarus, for the Birmingham Opera Company, with stage-Director Graham Vick; a tour of France with Orchestre de l'Opéra de Rouen, to include performances at festivals in Besançon and La Chaise-Dieu; a series of concerts at the best halls across Belgium with the Symfonieorkest Vlaanderen; and debuts with the Orchestre National de Bordeaux-Aquitaine, the Orchestre National des Pays de Loire and the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne, as well as a return invitation to Japan.  

    In 2015, Jonathon won the 54th International Competition for Young Conductors in Besançon, taking the Grand Prize aged only 23, and since has conducted the St. Petersburg Symphony Orchestra, Basel Symphony Orchestra, Prague Symphony Orchestra, Panda Wind Orchestra in Japan, the Philharmonie Zuidnederlandand, the Orchestre National de Lille, the Orchestre National de Lorraine, Chineke! Orchestra in the UK, and the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra for a production of Kurt Weill's Lost in the Stars, as part of his Conducting Fellowship supported by the Kurt Weill Foundation.

    Originally a cellist, Jonathon commenced conducting studies at The Boston Conservatory in the class of Andrew Altenbach. He went on to occupy the position of Assistant Conductor for its opera department and the Boston Opera Collaborative from 2012 to 2014, where he worked on productions including La bohème, Die Zauberflöte and The Rape of Lucretia. In 2013, he became the youngest ever semi-finalist at the Blue Danube International Opera Conducting Competition and furthered his education with postgraduate studies with Sian Edwards at the Royal Academy of Music, London, from where he graduated in June 2016.
