  • Youth Orchestra Los Angeles (YOLA) Alumni to
    Perform During
    "Nobel Day of Music"
    in Stockholm, Sweden,
    Conducted by Gustavo Dudamel

Los Angeles, CA (December 6, 2017) - Three alumni of the LA Phil's Youth Orchestra Los Angeles (YOLA) program will perform in Stockholm, Sweden during Nobel Week, which features the 2017 Nobel Prize Concert with Gustavo Dudamel conducting the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra. These YOLA alumni will join a new Orchestra of the Future, comprised of young musicians from El Sistema-inspired programs on five different continents.

In cooperation with the Nobel Foundation and El Sistema Sweden, Gustavo Dudamel has created a Nobel Day of Music on December 8. On this date, the Orchestra of the Future, conducted by Dudamel, will perform before the Nobel Laureates, the Swedish Royal Family, and distinguished guests in the Green Room of the Stockholm Concert Hall. Earlier in the day, the group will attend the dress rehearsal of the Nobel Prize Concert, featuring the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Dudamel. (The Nobel Prize Concert will take place later that night.) The day will also see thousands of children in El Sistema-inspired programs across Sweden give concerts in their local communities, while Nobel Laureates contribute comments on the significance of music in their work and lives.

Additional Nobel Week activities include a guided tour of the Nobel Museum, where Dudamel will deliver a lecture in the prestigious Nobel Calling series on December 6. The visit will include a flute performance by YOLA alumnus Daniel Egwurube. El Sistema Sweden will be hosting a visit to one of their sites, where the young musicians will engage in side-by-side musical activities. In addition to participating in rehearsals with fellow musicians from around the world, the group will also partake in cultural outings around Stockholm.

    The participating YOLA alumni are:

Moses Aubrey, junior studying Bass Performance at UCLA
Daniel Egwurube, junior studying Flute Performance at University of Nevada Las Vegas
Juliana Rodriguez, sophomore studying Viola Performance at San Francisco Conservatory

Youth Orchestra Los Angeles (YOLA) is LA Phil Music & Artistic Director Gustavo Dudamel's signature initiative through which the LA Phil and community partners provide free instruments, intensive music training, and academic support to students from underserved neighborhoods, empowering them to become passionate learners and vital citizens. Beginning with 80 students in 2007, YOLA today serves nearly 1,000 students, studying up to 15 hours per week at four community-based sites where mentorship and leadership training is integral. YOLA students have the opportunity to work with LA Phil musicians and world-renowned artists and conductors, travel to cities foreign and domestic, and perform in iconic venues such as Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Hollywood Bowl. YOLA is made possible in South Los Angeles, the Rampart District, Westlake/MacArthur Park, and East Los Angeles through the following community partners that share fiscal and programmatic responsibilities with the LA Phil: EXPO Center, Harmony Project, Heart of Los Angeles, Camino Nuevo Charter Academy and the Los Angeles County Office of Education.
