CELLISTS BEN HONG, ERIC BYERS AND
TIMOTHY LOO REPLACE ROBERT DEMAINE IN
LA PHIL PROGRAM AT
WALT DISNEY CONCERT HALL
Friday and Saturday January 19 - 20, 2018, at 8 PM
Sunday, January 21, 2018, AT 2 PM
WHAT:
Cellists Ben Hong, Eric Byers and Timothy Loo will replace Robert deMaine in the Los Angeles Philharmonic's U.S. premiere of Bernd Alois Zimmermann's Concerto for Cello and Orchestra, en forme de pas de trois program, Friday, January 19 through Sunday, January 21. Due to the highly complex nature of the work, these three cellists will share the role of soloist in these performances. Zimmermann's work was premiered in 1968 and this new production, designed by the Tero Saarinen Company builds upon Zimmermann's original intent for choreography with a contemporary interpretation.
The complete program is as follows:
BACH (arr. WEBERN) Fuga (Ricercata) from The Musical Offering, BWV 1079
ZIMMERMANN Concerto for Cello and Orchestra, en forme de pas de trois (U.S. premiere)
Introduzione (Dans la vallée des songes)
Allegro (La Fée, "Don Quichotte" et la Sentimentale)
Ben Hong
Adagio (Les trois cygnes blancs)
Eric Byers
Tempo di marcia (Les trois Paladins)
Blues and Coda (La Fée, cello, and bass)
Timothy Loo
