2002/2003 Toyota Symphonies for Youth
WITH ASSOCIATE CONDUCTOR MIGUEL HARTH-BEDOYA
AND HOST JOHN DE LANCIE
FEATURING THE LOS ANGELES CHILDREN'S CHORUS
SATURDAY, APRIL 5, 11 AM, AT THE DOROTHY CHANDLER PAVILION
Pre-Concert Activities Start at 10 AM
The 2002/2003 Toyota Symphonies for Youth concert series featuring the Los Angeles Philharmonic continues with Sing-a-Song! - The Orchestra and Voice with Associate Conductor Miguel Harth-Bedoya, narrator John de Lancie, and the Los Angeles Children's Chorus on Saturday, April 5 at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. Families are invited to take part in the pre-concert activities including arts, crafts, dance, and storytelling beginning at 10 a.m. with the one-hour concert following at 11 a.m.
Sing-a-Song! - The Orchestra and Voice is an abridged production of Engelbert Humperdinck's fairy-tale opera Hansel and Gretel, the story of two siblings who find themselves in a gingerbread house with a wicked witch who has fiendish plans. The semi-staged concert features a big screen above the orchestra with live projection of the performing musicians.
Throughout the season, the Toyota Symphonies for Youth concerts have been exploring orchestral music's relation to other art forms and showcasing this to children in an effort to create an exciting and accessible way to appreciate the arts. Already this season, concerts have included live actors, ballet, award-winning children's artwork, and now with Sing-a-Song! - The Orchestra and Voice, children are able to learn more about the vocal arts by attending a live mini-opera.
Held on Saturday mornings, Toyota Symphonies for Youth is an entertaining series of concerts designed for children ages 5-11 and their families. Families should plan to arrive early and spend the morning making music, meeting musicians, listening to stories, learning to sing, and
creating art projects with all activities revolving around the day's featured musical theme. Actor John de Lancie, best known as "Q" on Star Trek, The Next Generation, returns for a fifth season as host.
The 2002/2003 season, the eighth year that Toyota has sponsored the series, includes one more Toyota Symphonies for Youth concert with the Los Angeles Philharmonic: Hooray for Hollywood - Music and the Movies on May 10, 2003.
Toyota Symphonies for Youth receives additional support from the following: Ann and Gordon Getty Foundation, The William Randolph Hearst Foundations, Morgan Stanley, the Los Angeles County Arts Commission, the City of Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Department, and the California Arts Council, a State agency. Toyota Symphonies for Youth are supported, in part, by the Los Angeles County Arts Commission.
