Los Angeles, CA (June 5, 2018) - The Los Angeles Philharmonic Association today announced the following updates to the 2018/19 season at Walt Disney Concert Hall.
On Tuesday, October 23, 2018, the Colburn Orchestra - the Colburn Conservatory of Music's flagship ensemble, hailed as an "excellent young orchestra" by the Los Angeles Times - will return to Walt Disney Concert Hall, conducted by Valery Gergiev. This concert is a part of the LA Phil's Sounds About Town series, which showcases L.A.'s next generation of orchestral talent. The program for this concert will be announced at a later date.
On Sunday, March 24, 2019, Iron & Wine will make his Walt Disney Concert Hall debut, joined for the first time by an orchestra to perform his sophomore album, Our Endless Numbered Days. The performance, conducted by David Campbell, will celebrate the 15th anniversary of the release of Our Endless Numbered Days, a critically acclaimed record which was included on lists by both NPR and Paste Magazine for top 50 albums of the decade. This concert is part of the LA Phil's Songbook series and replaces a performance by Neil Finn, who has cancelled due to his participation in the Fleetwood Mac world tour.

About Colburn Orchestra
Founded in 2003, the Colburn Orchestra is the flagship ensemble of the Colburn Conservatory of Music. Under the direction of Music Director Yehuda Gilad, the Colburn Orchestra performs for Southern California audiences at venues such as Walt Disney Concert Hall, Ambassador Auditorium, Royce Hall, Segerstrom Concert Hall, and The Soraya, formerly Valley Performing Arts Center. Since its inception, Gilad and the esteemed faculty at Colburn have invited leading guest artists to perform with the Colburn Orchestra to mirror a professional orchestral experience. Visiting conductors have included James Conlon, Plácido Domingo, Gustavo Dudamel, Michael Tilson Thomas, Sir Neville Marriner, Kurt Masur, Nicholas McGegan, and Ludovic Morlot. The Colburn Orchestra has made four commercial recordings, and concerts have been broadcast on Southern California's independent television station KCET for the arts series Open Call, as well as classical music radio station KUSC. The ensemble makes its United Kingdom debut at the Edinburgh International Festival in August of 2018, followed by a performance in Dublin. Dedicated to serving the greater Los Angeles community, the Colburn Orchestra performs for schools in neighboring communities twice a year giving five concerts in a one-week period to school children of all ages.
About Valery Gergiev
Valery Gergiev is internationally recognized as one of the most outstanding musical figures today. His inspired leadership as Artistic and General Director of the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg, Russia, where he oversees the Kirov Orchestra, Ballet, and Opera, has brought universal acclaim to this distinguished organization. Together with the Kirov Opera and Orchestra, Gergiev has toured extensively throughout North America and Europe, as well as to China, Japan, South America, Australia, and Israel. In addition to his leadership of the Mariinsky Theater, he is also the Principal Conductor of the Rotterdam Philharmonic, Artistic Director of the Rotterdam Philharmonic/Gergiev Festival presented each September, Director and Founder of the Mikkeli International Festival in Finland, and Principal Guest Conductor of the Metropolitan Opera.
Gergiev and the Kirov Opera have appeared in residencies at the Metropolitan Opera, Los Angeles Opera, the Chatelet in Paris, and the Graz Opera House. Gergiev has appeared as guest conductor with the Vienna Philharmonic, the London Philharmonic, the Philharmonia of London, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the National Symphony, and the Pittsburgh Symphony.
Born in Moscow to Ossetian parents, Gergiev studied conducting with Ilya Musin at the Leningrad Conservatory. He won the Herbert von Karajan Conductors Competition in Berlin at age 24 and made his Kirov Opera debut in 1978 with War and Peace. He was appointed Artistic Director and Principal Conductor in 1988. He is the recipient of the Dmitri Shostakovich Award and the Golden Mask Award, the most prestigious theater prize in Russia. Musical America named him Conductor of the Year, and he was named the People's Artist of Russia, the country's highest cultural award.
Gergiev has recorded exclusively for Universal (Philips) Classics since 1989. His recordings with the Kirov encompass opera, ballet, and symphony repertoire. His recent releases include Shostakovich's Symphony No. 7, the Gubaidulina Viola Concerto with Yuri Bashmet, the Tchaikovsky and Miaskovsky violin concertos with Vadim Repin, and Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade, which has been internationally acclaimed as one of the best recordings of this work.
About Iron & Wine
Iron & Wine is the musical project of singer-songwriter Sam Beam. Born and raised in South Carolina, Beam is a former film professor who got his musical start making home recordings, before landing on Sub Pop Records. Iron & Wine's 2002 debut, The Creek Drank the Cradle, garnered both critical and popular acclaim, vaulting Sam into the spotlight of the burgeoning indie-folk/Americana scene as one of its new and leading voices.
Over the course of a 17-year career, Iron & Wine has sold over two million records worldwide and earned over 1.5 billion streams across all platforms. There have been six studio records, including 2017's Beast Epic, which received a Grammy® nomination for Best Americana Album.
Featured collaborations with Calexico, Ben Bridwell (Band of Horses), and Jesca Hoop have produced EPs and a full-length recording. Iron & Wine's music has become a bedrock of usage in the advertising world and is heard in numerous films (Twilight, Garden State) and TV shows (Grey's Anatomy, Parenthood).

About David Campbell
Arranger-conductor David Campbell has guest conducted the Los Angeles Philharmonic; the Dallas, Melbourne, and Baltimore symphony orchestras; the Tokyo and Queensland philharmonic orchestras; the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra; and the opening ceremonies of the 2000 Olympic Games. He conducted the orchestra at the Hollywood Bowl for shows by The xx, Sheryl Crow, Death Cab for Cutie, Faith Hill, Ray LaMontagne, Willie Nelson, and Beck.
His arrangement work appears on more than 425 gold or platinum albums, including 23 Grammy Albums of the Year (nominees and winners). His film work has earned him two Oscar Awards for music.
Campbell grew up in Seattle, studying violin, viola, piano, orchestration, and conducting from an early age. After studying with iconic viola virtuoso William Primrose, he attended the Manhattan School of Music and played several seasons with the American Symphony at Carnegie Hall under Leopold Stokowski. In his early days as a studio musician in L.A., he was fortunate to play on historic sessions such as Marvin Gaye's "Let's Get It On," Bill Withers' "Lean on Me," and Carole King's "Tapestry."
As an arranger, Campbell began a string of successes from the '70s that has continued to the present day, with albums and songs including "Your Smiling Face" (James Taylor), "The Pretender" (Jackson Browne), "The Rose" (Bette Midler), "Don't Know Much" (Linda Ronstadt), The Future (Leonard Cohen), "Iris" (Goo Goo Dolls), "Uninvited" (Alanis Morissette), "Good Riddance [Time of Your Life]" (Green Day), "Tal Vez" (Ricky Martin), "Jaded" (Aerosmith), Under My Skin (Avril Lavigne), "100 Years" (Five for Fighting), "Bring Me to Life" (Evanescence), "I Hope You Dance" (Lee Ann Womack), "Not Ready to Make Nice" (Dixie Chicks), "Breaking the Habit" (Linkin Park), Sea Change and Morning Phase (Beck), "Listen" (Beyoncé), "My Wish" (Rascal Flatts), "Because of You" (Kelly Clarkson),"Wrecking Ball" (Miley Cyrus), Red (Taylor Swift), All that Echoes (Josh Groban), and 21 (Adele) - as well as recent No. 1s from P!nk (Beautiful Trauma) and Beck (Colors).
In 2010, he wrote the incidental music, arrangements, and orchestrations for the musical Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, which ran on Broadway for three years. Directed by Julie Taymor, it featured songs by Bono and The Edge.
Recent film scores composed by Campbell include David O. Russell's Joy (2015), Colombia: Magia Salvaje (2015), and In Search of Fellini (2017). In 2016, he co-composed and arranged Rules of the Game, a full-length ballet by Pharrell Williams, premiered by the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, with Campbell conducting.
He arranged and conducted the scores for Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, Oliver Stone's W, August: Osage County, Foxcatcher, Dead Man Walking, the Oscar®-winning score for Brokeback Mountain, the Oscar-nominated songs from Pearl Harbor and Dreamgirls, and the Oscar-winning song "You'll Be in My Heart" from Tarzan. He was the conductor/arranger for the movie musicals Dreamgirls, Rent, Rock of Ages, and Annie.
The official song of the London Olympics, "Survival," featured a collaborative choir arrangement by Muse and Campbell. In 2013, he co-arranged and conducted the 167-member orchestra for Beck's "Sound & Vision" 360-degree video project.
