Pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet And Cellist Claudio Bohórquez Appear As Soloists
TUESDAY AND THURSDAY, JULY 8 & 10, AT 8 PM
July 10 sponsored by United Airlines
Conductor Andreas Delfs makes his Hollywood Bowl debut in July kicking off the Philharmonic's Tuesday and Thursday subscription programming for the summer, July 8 and 11, at 8 p.m. Pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet joins the orchestra as soloist on July 8; cellist Claudio Bohórquez performs with the orchestra on July 10. On July 8, the Philharmonic performs a varied program, opening with Wagner's Prelude to Die Meistersinger, Liszt's Piano Concerto No. 1, with Thibaudet as soloist. The program closes with the famed Symphony No. 7 by Beethoven.
The line-up on July 11 brings music of Schubert, Haydn, Johann Strauss, Jr. and Richard Strauss to the stage, featuring German cellist Claudio Bohórquez in Haydn's Cello Concerto in C. Schubert's Rosamunde Overture opens the program; also included are Richard Strauss' Rosenkavalier Suite, and J. Strauss Jr.'s famed On the Beautiful Blue Danube rounds out the evening.
German-born ANDREAS DELFS, the Juilliard-trained conductor and music director of both the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra and the Milwaukee Symphony, made his Los Angeles Philharmonic debut last April during the Mozart Festival. Delfs has established a major career in both Europe and North America. Formerly Music Director of the Bern Opera, as well as a regular guest conductor of the Bern Symphony Orchestra, and the Resident Conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony, Mr. Delfs also served as Music Director of the Swiss Youth Orchestra from 1986 to 1995. That ensemble's first compact disc, recorded in 1991 under Delfs, received international critical acclaim. He makes his Hollywood Bowl debut with these concerts.
Acclaimed German cellist CLAUDIO BOHÓRQUEZ has triumphed at prestigious competitions from an early age, including the Czech Radio's Concertino Praga, the Youth Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, and the International Rostropovich Competition in Paris. His career continues to earn him various prizes such as the first International Casals Competition and he has appeared with such ensembles as the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, the Dresden Staatskapelle, and the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra. In 1999, Bohórquez performed the cello adaptation of Krzysztof Penderecki's Viola Concerto conducted by the composer at the Music-Biennale in Zagreb, Croatia. He makes his Hollywood Bowl debut with this concert.
Celebrated French pianist and Angeleno JEAN-YVES THIBAUDET has been a long-time collaborator with the Philharmonic, and last season, his involvement with the On Location Residency Program allowed him to appear as soloist for various concerts, as well as present a piano master class and giving a jazz performance. Renowned for his elegant and sophisticated playing, Thibaudet appears with major orchestras and ensembles worldwide and is a prolific and highly-praised recording artist. The versatile musician's diverse repertoire extends beyond the classical literature into the jazz genre. His 1997 CD featuring compositions of the late jazz great Bill Evans received Germany's Echo Award for 1998. Jean-Yves Thibaudet last performed at the Hollywood Bowl in 2000.
One of the largest natural amphitheaters in the world, with a seating capacity of just under 18,000, the HOLLYWOOD BOWL has been the summer home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic since its official opening in 1922, and, in 1991 gave its name to The Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, a resident ensemble that has filled a special niche in the musical life of Southern California. A hit from its very first season, the Hollywood Bowl has remained popular and accessible to a wide cross-section of Southern California's diverse population. To this day, $1 buys a seat at the top of the Bowl for many of the Los Angeles Philharmonic's concerts. While the Bowl is best known for its sizzling summer nights, during the day California's youngest patrons enjoy "SummerSounds: Music for Kids at the Hollywood Bowl," the Southland's most popular summer arts festival for children, now in its 35th season. Attendance figures over the past several decades have soared: in 1980 the Bowl first topped the half-million mark and last summer, close to one million admissions were recorded. It is no wonder that the Bowl's summer music festivals have become as much a part of a Southern California summer as beaches and barbecues, the Dodgers and Disneyland.
