The soul of Argentina takes over the Hollywood Bowl on September 5 and 6, at 8:30 p.m., as Associate Conductor Miguel Harth-Bedoya leads the Los Angeles Philharmonic in a program exploring traditional and Nuevo Tango. With a troupe of dancers bringing the music to life and supported by the full orchestra, choreographer Hector Zaraspe transforms the bowl stage into sultry clubs and theaters of Buenos Aires.
Tango developed on the outskirts of Buenos Aires during the late 19th century. The Philharmonic's program traces the transformation of the tango from early 20th-century works of composers such as Carlos Gardel, Ángel Villoldo, and Gerard Matos Rodríguez to the entries of Nuevo Tango revolutionary Astor Piazzolla. Along with such distinctive Piazzolla favorites as "La muerte del angel," "Verano porteño," and "Fuga y misterio," the program also features his 1985 Double Concerto for guitar, bandonéon, and string orchestra in a performance by acclaimed guitarist Manuel Barrueco and bandonéon master Horacio Romo.
Los Angeles Philharmonic Associate Conductor MIGUEL HARTH-BEDOYA is Music Director of the Fort Worth Symphony, a title he also holds with the Auckland Philharmonia in New Zealand. As one of the most exciting young conductors in America, he has an active guest-conducting schedule, which includes appearances with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, New York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, Philadelphia Orchestra, Seattle Symphony, Quebec Symphony, and the Mexico National Symphony. Festival appearances include Grant Park, Tanglewood, Rencontres Musicales d'Evian in France, the Domaine Forget International Festival in Quebec, and the Musicarchitettura International Festival in Italy. Born in 1968 in Lima, Peru, Miguel Harth-Bedoya holds degrees in conducting from The Curtis Institute of Music and The Juilliard School. Harth-Bedoya last conducted at the Bowl in 2002.
MANUEL BARRUECO is recognized internationally as a leading guitarist in the world today. His international tours take him to some of the most important musical centers in the world each season, including a recent appearance with the Royal Philharmonic in Madrid, which commemorated the 100th anniversary of Joaquín Rodrigo's birth. Mr. Barrueco has made well over a dozen recordings for EMI. His recording of Joaquín Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez with conductor/tenor Plácido Domingo and the Philharmonia Orchestra, was mentioned as the best recording of that piece in Classic CD magazine. His latest release, Nylon & Steel, is a collection of duos with guitar greats: Al Di Meola, Steve Morse (Deep Purple) and Andy Summers (The Police). Manuel Barrueco began playing the guitar at the age of eight and he attended the Esteban Salas Conservatory in his native Santiago de Cuba. He immigrated with his family to the United States in 1967, later completing his advanced studies at the Peabody Conservatory of Music. Mr. Barrueco is on the faculty of the Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore, where he also conducts a yearly master class in June.
HORACIO ROMO began studying bandoneón at the age of nine with Marcos Madrigal and Julio Pane. He played in many orchestras including the Buenos Aires Youth Tango Orchestra and the Color Tango Orchestra, where he stayed for nine years. During this time he recorded the CD Timeless Tango, performing on tour in Italy, Holland, Spain, France, Brazil, Uruguay, Japan, Norway and Sweden. He has also worked with Julio Iglesias in Spain and France, conductor Lalo Schiffrin and tango singers Roberto Goyeneche and Hugo Marcel. Mr. Romo has played the Piazzolla's bandoneón and guitar concerto with the following orchestras: the Eugene Symphony Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Auckland Philharmonia, and the Lima Symphony Orchestra. Most recently, he performed with the Fernando Suarez Paz Quintet, the Astor Piazzolla Foundation Quintet, and additionally with a trio including Gustavo Beytehnan.
HECTOR ZARASPE, a native of Argentina, is internationally known as a dance choreographer, ballet master and artistic director. After eleven years of dancing and teaching in Spain, Mr. Zaraspe first toured the USA in 1964 with Antonio Ballet de Madrid before being introduced to Rudolf Nureyev and Margot Fonteyn in 1965, and eventually became the couple's private teacher. Mr. Zaraspe has instructed at Teatro Colon (Buenos Aires), Hamburg Opera House, Ballet Internacional de Caracas, Ballet Theater Francais, and Ballet Grand Theater (Geneva). He has received numerous honors and grants, including three awards from the Fulbright Commission, a grant from UNESCO where he and Fonteyn founded the first ballet company in Colombia, and the Konex prize from Argentina.
