  • Café Tacuba and Kinky Make Their Bowl Debuts

    KCRW'S WORLD FESTIVAL 2003
SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 7 AT 7 PM

    Sponsored by Chandon

The Hollywood Bowl showcases the progression of Latin music from the traditional to the contemporary in Latin Roots and Rock featuring Los Lobos, Café Tacuba and Kinky, on September 7, at 7 p.m. The groups featured on the program draw on rock, Tex-Mex, country, folk, R&B, electronica, hip-hop, and traditional Spanish and Mexican music, demonstrating the influences the various genres have had on each other.

The Latin Roots and Rock program concludes KCRW's World Festival 2003, which was created by the Hollywood Bowl in partnership with KCRW (89.9 FM/National Public Radio). The popular six-concert series began this summer with Global Divas on June 29 and concludes with the September 7 program. The evening is hosted by radio personality Nic Harcourt, KCRW's music director and host of the popular daily show "Morning Becomes Eclectic."

Known as rock's most metaphysical party band, East L.A.'s LOS LOBOS have become the preeminent Mexican-American force in Latin music. From traditional blues to Spanish folk, L.A. punk to Chicano rock, the band gained national attention for their first major label release in 1984 and again for their hit cover of "La Bamba" in 1987. They have spawned several successful spin-offs (Los Super Seven, Latin Playboys), explored and conquered the alt-Latin, rock en español, and tex-mex genres, and all the while kept audiences challenged and entertained throughout their 30-year career. Los Lobos last performed the Bowl at the Playboy Jazz Festival in 1995.

Time Magazine described them as one of the "50 Future Latin American Leaders" and CAFÉ TACUBA has lived up to the title. From Mexico City, the Latin alternative group's fusion of popular American styles (hip hop, ska, dance) with traditional sounds of Central and South America has earned critical praise and a rapidly growing international fan base. Formed in 1992 by four design students, the band received a Best Rock Album of the Year award at the first Latin Grammy award ceremonies in 1999 and just released their highly anticipated fifth album. This is Café Tacuba's Bowl debut.

Evocative of a Latin Beastie Boys, the Latin electronica of KINKY has swept America with the 2002 debut self-titled release. The quintet from Monterrey, Mexico, whose unprecedented synthesized Latin sound instantly earned them a Grammy nomination for Best Latin Rock/Alternative Album (2003), has toured non-stop in support of the record. These stirring live performances exemplify the band's infectious energy, raw talent and songwriting skills, which are equally evident on record. Kinky will make their Bowl debut with this concert.
