Soloists from the Los Angeles Philharmonic New Music Group are featured in the Philharmonic's debut performance of the 2003/2004 Green Umbrella new music series at Walt Disney Concert Hall on Monday, November 3 at 8 p.m. The program-one of five showcasing the cutting edge of music-is highlighted by the world premieres of two Los Angeles Philharmonic New Music Group commissions by composers Lee Hyla and Colin Matthews.

An Upbeat Live pre-concert event takes place one hour prior to the concert in BP Hall at Walt Disney Concert Hall, and is free to all ticket holders. Steven Stucky, the Philharmonic's Consulting Composer for New Music, moderates a panel with Los Angeles Philharmonic Music Director Esa-Pekka Salonen and composers Lee Hyla and Colin Matthews.

Hyla's Detour Ahead (underwritten by Eve Steele Gelles and Peter Gelles) and Matthews' Basoonnova (underwritten by Judith and Ronald S. Rosen) receive their first performances at the November 3 concert. The program also includes Esa-Pekka Salonen's Laughing Unlearnt; Oog, for cello and soundtrack by Michel van der Aa (in its U.S. premiere); Darknesse Visible by Thomas Adès; and Steve Reich's New York Counterpoint. Featured soloists include Philharmonic's Principal Concertmaster Martin Chalifour, Principal Cellist Peter Stumpf, pianist Joanne Pearce Martin, Principal Clarinetist Lorin Levee, Principal Bassist Dennis Trembly, and Principal Bassoonist David Breidenthal. The concert will be presented without intermission.

Now in its 21st year, the Green Umbrella series showcases new music ranging from solo works to chamber opera, performed by members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and and Los Angeles Philharmonic New Music Group. Concerts take place in the Philharmonic's new home, Walt Disney Concert Hall.

Principal bassoonist DAVID BREIDENTHAL is a 34-year veteran of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and successor to his former teacher, Frederick Moritz. A graduate of UCLA, Breidenthal has been a soloist at music festivals in Los Angeles, Claremont, and Alaska, and he has been a lecturer on the music faculties of UCLA and the Music Academy of the West. He has performed as soloist in the Mozart and Weber concertos and the Strauss Duet-Concertino (with Michele Zukovsky, under conductor Zubin Mehta) with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. He regularly appears on Philharmonic Chamber Music Society programs and with the Philharmonic New Music Group.

MARTIN CHALIFOUR began his tenure as Principal Concertmaster of the Los Angeles Philharmonic with the 1995/96 season. Before coming to Los Angeles, Chalifour joined The Cleveland Orchestra in 1990 as Associate Concertmaster and later held the position of Acting Concertmaster for two seasons. Prior to that, he served as Associate Concertmaster and Acting Concertmaster of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. Chalifour appears frequently as a soloist and in recital, and he has toured with chamber ensembles throughout North America and Europe. He regularly performs in a number of summer music festivals including San Diego's Mainly Mozart Festival and Florida's Sarasota Music Festival. Born in Montreal, Canada, Chalifour graduated with a unanimous First Prize from the Montreal Conservatory at the age of 18, and is a graduate of The Curtis Institute of Music.

LORIN LEVEE joined the Los Angeles Philharmonic as bass clarinetist in 1976 and became principal clarinetist at the start of the 1981/82 season. He performs often in the Philharmonic's Chamber Music Group concerts. With the New Music Group he has been featured in local premieres of works by Luciano Berio, Harrison Birtwistle, Donald Martino, and Shulamit Ran; in 1994 he presented the U.S. premiere of Jouni Kaipainen's Clarinet Concerto, Carpe diem!, under Esa-Pekka Salonen. Mr. Levee has been heard as soloist on several occasions with the Orchestra at the Music Center. Prior to coming to Los Angeles, Levee was a member of Chicago's Grant Park Symphony, the Chicago Lyric Opera Orchestra, the Chicago Chamber Orchestra (Principal), the Contemporary Chamber Players at the University of Chicago, and the American Ballet Theater Orchestra (Principal). He appeared as soloist with the Chicago Grant Park Symphony, the Chicago Chamber Orchestra, the Chicago Civic Opera, and the Grant Park Symphony.

Joining the Los Angeles Philharmonic as principal keyboardist in 2001, pianist JOANNE PEARCE MARTIN performs regularly on five instruments - piano, organ, celesta, harpsichord, and synthesizer. She also appears frequently on the Philharmonic's chamber music and Green Umbrella series. Originally from Allentown, PA, Martin continues her career as a soloist, chamber musician, and recording artist. A graduate of Philadelphia's Curtis Institute of Music, she has performed as soloist with many orchestras in the U.S and abroad, including the Philadelphia Orchestra. She has concertized with such artists as Joshua Bell, Lynn Harrell, Steven Isserlis, Iona Brown, Aaron Rosand, Julius Baker, and Joseph Silverstein. Martin has appeared at major summer music festivals and on concert series spanning four continents. She is a founding member of Santa Barbara's Camerata Pacifica, as well as the Los Angeles Piano Trio, and performs frequently on local chamber music series such as Pacific Serenades.

After serving for 12 years as the Associate Principal Cellist of the Philadelphia Orchestra, PETER STUMPF became Principal Cellist of the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the start of the 2002/2003 season. He is a dedicated chamber musician, a member of the Johannes Quartet, and a frequent participant at the Marlboro Music Festival. Stumpf has collaborated with Wolfgang Sawallisch in performances in Philadelphia, Saratoga, Carnegie Hall, and at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. As a member of the Casals Hall Ensemble he has toured Japan, and has toured in the U.S. with pianist Mitsuko Uchida in performances of the complete Mozart Trios. He has also performed in concert with the Emerson String Quartet. An active recitalist, Stumpf has performed at the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C., at Jordan Hall in Boston, and at the universities of Hartford and Delaware. Stumpf has appeared as soloist with many orchestras. Trained at the Curtis Institute and the New England Conservatory, he was awarded first prizes at the Washington International Competition, the Graham-Stahl Competition, and the Aspen Concerto Competition.

DENNIS TREMBLY joined the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 1970 and became one of two principal bassists in the 1973/74 season. Active as a soloist, Trembly was a semifinalist in the 1973 G. B. Dealey Competition in Dallas, and he won second prize at the 1978 International Double Bass Competition on the Isle of Man, where he performed Dittersdorf's Concerto in E major with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. He has performed and taught at universities in the U.S., Mexico, and Europe, and has been featured in recital at International Society of Bassists conventions in Cincinnati, Los Angeles, and Bloomington and Indianapolis, Indiana. The Philharmonic has presented him as a soloist in Green Umbrella, Campus Concerts, and Symphonies for Youth performances. In addition to appearing with distinguished Philharmonic colleagues on its Chamber Music Society series, Trembly has performed chamber music with such musicians as Menahem Pressler, John Perry, Antoinette Perry, Kevin Fitz-Gerald, Alice Schoenfeld, Eleonore Schoenfeld, Donald McInnes, Alan de Veritch, Cynthia Phelps, and Milton Thomas.
