  • LOS ANGELES PHILHARMONIC ASSOCIATION COLLABORATES WITH THE HeArt PROJECT IN PROGRAM HELPING LA TEENS FROM ALTERNATIVE HIGH SCHOOLS EXPLORE ARCHITECTURE AND MUSIC
  • Mar. 26, 2004
  • The Los Angeles Philharmonic Association collaborates with The HeArt Project-a local non-profit organization that links teens, artists and communities-to present the HeArt Project's "Music and Architecture" event on Friday, March 26, 2004 at noon in BP Hall at Walt Disney Concert Hall. One hundred teenagers display and discuss artwork reflecting their visions of the intersection of music and architecture. Los Angeles City Council Member Jan Perry takes a student-led tour of the artwork and speaks to those in attendance.

The March 26 event is the culmination of five workshops that took place from January to March at four LAUSD continuation high schools and one after-school program. Five professional artists, including a musician, an architect, and a designer, joined with students at these schools to explore the concepts of music and architecture and guided the students in creating architectural models and musical instruments reflecting the spirit of Walt Disney Concert Hall. Participants had the opportunity to tour The Museum of Contemporary Art's Frank Gehry exhibit to gain inspiration for their artwork as part of the workshops.

Student participants in the program worked with musician and instrument maker Robert S. Hilton, architect Leslie Thomas, designer Edie Kahula Pereira, and artist German Robles and Elizabeth Martin to create models of instrument-inspired buildings; functional instruments made from recycled PVC pipe and cigar boxes; and models of dance clubs inspired by a variety of musical genres. All projects are displayed at the March 26 event.

Since 1992, The HeArt Project has brought long-term innovative arts programs to alternative high schools lacking comprehensive, high-quality arts programs. Through workshops and public presentations, residencies and scholarships, HeArt Project students develop their individual artistic voices, learn valuable life skills and form connections to their cultures and the greater community. Over the past eleven years, HeArt Project students have presented their work at The Getty Center, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Museum of Contemporary Art, the Los Angeles Theatre Center, the Los Angeles Zoo, California Plaza, and the Richard J. Riordan Central Public Library.

The fourth venue of the Music Center of Los Angeles County, Walt Disney Concert Hall is the new home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Community programs at Walt Disney Concert Hall are presented by the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association's (LAPA) departments of Public Affairs and Education. The goal of LAPA's community initiatives is to provide cultural and educational programs for the many diverse communities that comprise the city of Los Angeles.
