The Los Angeles Philharmonic continues its Colburn Celebrity Series with pianist Alfred Brendel and baritone Matthias Goerne in recital on Monday, March 29, at 8 p.m., at Walt Disney Concert Hall. This recital is part of the Los Angeles Philharmonic's On Location program which features Alfred Brendel as the artist in residence for the 2003/2004 season. Entering its third year, the On Location program presents distinguished artists in multi-faceted ways. Brendel's artistry will be showcased as a chamber musician, recitalist, accompanist, poet, and soloist.

Baritone Matthias Goerne's captivating voice has already been showcased this year with the Los Angeles Philharmonic performing Mahler's Songs from Des Knaben Wunderhorn. The March 29 recital is devoted to a single work: Franz Schubert's Winterreise. The text of the Austrian composer's last song cycle, by German poet Wilhelm Müller, depicts the emotions of a lovelorn wanderer against a bleak, wintry landscape.

Brendel and Goerne's appearance is one of eight recital presentations that comprise the Los Angeles Philharmonic's 2003/2004 Colburn Celebrity Series. The series will continue with a solo performance by Brendel on April 6, and will conclude with pianist András Schiff on May 9.

Pianist ALFRED BRENDEL began his formal music education at the age of six and, though his piano lessons ended at the age of sixteen, he continued to study with Paul Baumgartner and later attended masterclasses given by Eduard Steuermann and Edwin Fischer. His reputation as a musical intellectual began early with his debut recital at the Kammermusiksaal in Graz, Austria in 1948. After winning a prize in the 1949 Busoni Competition in Bolzano, Italy, Brendel became active as a recording musician, which cultivated a truly international audience. Brendel, with an extensive discography featuring his renowned interpretations of Beethoven, Liszt, Mozart, Brahms, Haydn and Schubert, stands also as the first ever to record the entire catalogue of Beethoven's piano compositions and one of the few to have recorded all of Mozart's piano concertos. Since that time, Brendel has regularly appeared with the world's major orchestras and has toured internationally, performing the complete cycle of the 32 Beethoven sonatas and all five of his concertos. Recent engagements have included recital tours of North America and annual returns to Carnegie Hall.

German baritone MATTHIAS GOERNE most recently appeared with the Los Angeles Philharmonic in the summer of 2002 on its European festivals tour, to great acclaim. His international career has taken him throughout Europe and North America, in both recital and orchestra appearances, as well as in opera on some of the world's most renowned stages. Goerne's extensive discography includes lieder and orchestral works, most recently Bach's St. Matthew Passion on the Teldec label.
