The Los Angeles Philharmonic Association presents the final event of its Inside/Outside seminar series on Wednesday, May 19 at 7: 30 p.m. in Walt Disney Concert Hall's BP Hall. The program, called Blurring the Boundaries, features a unique discussion exploring the intersection of music, the creative process, genres and the city of Los Angeles. Participants in the discussion include internationally-acclaimed classical and contemporary pianist Christopher O'Riley (pictured), and songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, artist, and former Wall of Voodoo bass player Andy Prieboy. Moderator Josh Kun guides the unique discussion about where the lines between high and low, classical and popular, contemporary and traditional music are dissolved. Excerpts of live and recorded music are included in the program.

Begun in November 2003, the Philharmonic's Inside/Outside seminar series has included seven Wednesday evenings at Walt Disney Concert Hall, each exploring a different topic relating to the music, architecture and adventurous spirit that makes Los Angeles a vibrant, thriving, diverse metropolis. The May 19 program concludes the 2003/04 Inside/Outside series.

One of today's most versatile pianists, CHRISTOPHER O'RILEY enjoys a thriving concert career. His singularly broad repertoire ranges from music of the English Renaissance and French Baroque periods to the new works of today's leading composers to such non-classical forms as the tango. His performing schedule regularly takes him to major cities throughout America with frequent engagements at both Lincoln Center and the Kennedy Center. O'Riley's recordings also reflect the originality of his programming. Among his highly acclaimed solo releases are a Scriabin disc for Image Recordings and an all-Stravinsky disc on Elektra Nonesuch, featuring "Three Movements from Petrouchka" and Mr. O'Riley's own transcriptions of Apollo and Histoire du Soldat. He is also heard on a recent RCA Victor Red Seal release of French repertoire for flute and piano with James Galway. His discography is further highlighted by a Busoni album (including the rarely-heard Fantasia Contrappuntistica), a disc of Ravel's solo works, a recording of Beethoven Piano Sonatas, a collaboration with cellist Carter Brey entitled Le Grand Tango and the premiere recording of The Short-Tempered Clavier by the fabled composer P.D.Q. Bach. Even as he explores new stylistic territory, O'Riley remains in demand for his unique interpretations of the standard piano literature. He is a favorite guest with the foremost orchestras in Boston, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Cincinnati, Minnesota, Kansas City, Atlanta, Pittsburgh and St. Louis. He has also collaborated with conductors such as David Zinman, Leonard Slatkin, John Williams, Neeme Järvi, Edo de Waart, Yoel Levi, Hugh Wolff and Andrew Litton.

Songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, artist, and playwright ANDY PRIEBOY was raised in East Chicago where he wrote his first song at the age of 12. Prieboy joined Wall of Voodoo as bass player and recorded with them in the '80s. In the year the band disbanded, he wrote a song called "Tomorrow Wendy" for Concrete Blonde's breakthrough record, Bloodletting, and began work on what would become his debut, Upon My Wicked Son. Released in 1990 on the Doctor Dream label, the record combined Prieboy's fascination with vaudeville, art, opera, and satire. "Loving the Highway Man" was covered by Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris in 1999. In 1995 Prieboy released the sprawling Sins of Our Fathers, which took on the record industry, psychotic ex-lovers, and religion with a wit and precision that established Prieboy as a true underground hero. His current project is White Trash Wins Lotto, a play loosely based on the life of Guns N' Roses lead singer Axl Rose.

JOSH KUN is co-curator of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association's Inside/Outside seminar series. His writings on music have appeared in The Los Angeles Times, LA Weekly, The New York Times, The San Francisco Bay Guardian, The Boston Phoenix, and others. He teaches in the English Department at UC Riverside and is currently writing his first book, Strangers Among Sounds: Music, Race, and American Culture for UC Press. He has also written the introduction to the re-publication of Papa, Play For Me, the autobiography of Jewish musical comedian Mickey Katz and was a 2000-2002 Sundance Writers Fellow.
