BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra Chief Conductor Ilan Volkov makes his Hollywood Bowl debut in two concerts featuring pianist Andreas Haefliger on Tuesday and Thursday, July 20 and 22, at 8 p.m. The July 20 concert features two of Beethoven's famous "fifths": the Piano Concerto No. 5, "Emperor," and his Fifth Symphony. On July 22, Volkov conducts John Adams's Grand Pianola Music in addition to the "Emperor" Concerto.

Each concert makes a compelling musical juxtaposition: July 20 features two of Beethoven's most beloved works while July 22 boldly pairs Romantic and contemporary idioms in two dazzling piano works. Adams cites the "Emperor" Concerto as a specific source of inspiration in writing Grand Pianola Music.

A musical thinker whose interpretations spring from a rich cultural heritage, ANDREAS HAEFLIGER is one of the leading pianists of his generation. Highlights of recent seasons include the world premiere of Michael Colgrass' Crossworlds with the Boston Symphony; a return visit to the Chicago Symphony; a tour of Europe with baritone Matthias Goerne; and his New York Philharmonic debut in Messiaen's Turangalîla. A frequent guest of the world's leading symphonies and a prolific recitalist, Haefliger performs regularly in major music capitals throughout Europe and the United States. A native of Switzerland, he studied at the Juilliard School and made his New York recital debut in 1988. He last performed at the Hollywood Bowl in the 2001 season.

At the age of 19 he was appointed Young Conductor in Association to the Newcastle-based Northern Sinfonia. In 1997 he was appointed Principal Conductor of the London Philharmonic Youth Orchestra and two years later was invited by Seiji Ozawa to join the Boston Symphony Orchestra as Assistant Conductor.
