LYLE LOVETT emerged in the 1980s with a distinctive, idiosyncratic sound that was pivotal in the New Country movement. His willingness to dabble in everything from folk to big-band swing to traditional pop quickly allowed him to build up a cult following among alternative country and rock fans. After signing with record label MCA in 1986, he released his eponymous debut later that year to excellent reviews. After releasing a handful of records and a move from Texas to Los Angeles, Lovett began to spread his wings in the entertainment industry. He made inroads into several other parts of the business, including producing albums, making guest appearances, and appearing in several films, among them The Player, The Opposite of Sex, and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Most recently, Lovett released My Baby Don't Tolerate in September 2003, his first collection of new, original material in more than seven years.
SHELBY LYNNE'scareer has taken some twists and turns, but the path that led to her new album, Identity Crisis, fulfills a 13-year journey of artistic self-discovery. A virtual one-woman project, with Lynne writing all the songs and performing all the vocals and guitars with minimal though colorful added accompaniment, Identity Crisis is a breakthrough even more dramatic than 2000's acclaimed I Am Shelby Lynne, which earned her the Grammy award for Best New Artist - despite her having five previous albums and a decade of touring under her belt. Lynne's work ranged through country, blues, Southern soul, roots rock, Western swing, jazz, and adult contemporary pop. With her last two albums, Lynne has been embraced by rock critics, British audiences, and the alt-country crowd.
Los Angeles based duo eastmountainsouth create their own blend of country and folk characteristic of their southern upbringings on Clinch Mountain, Virginia. Formed in 1999, Kat Maslich and Peter Adams met each other on a TV spot audition and shared enough songwriting similarities that they formed their band. Discovered by Robbie Robertson, they inked a deal with DreamWorks and released their debut CD eastmountainsouth in 2003.
