Edwin Outwater Makes His L.A. Philharmonic Debut On Thursday, September 16 with a Rousing Russian Finale including Favorites by Tchaikovsky and Prokofiev

The Los Angeles Philharmonic concludes its season at the Hollywood Bowl with two distinctive programs. On Tuesday, September 14, at 8 p.m., Yasuo Shinozaki makes his final appearance with the Los Angeles Philharmonic as assistant conductor in a concert featuring pianist Orli Shaham in her Hollywood Bowl debut. On Thursday, September 16, at 8 p.m., the orchestra creates a new tradition to end its final summer performance celebrating music from a single country. The first concert features a dinner of "desserts" by Russian composers with guest conductor Edwin Outwater (pictured) and piano virtuoso Alexander Toradze.

The September 14 program features Shaham, a dynamic pianist who is the younger sister of violinist Gil Shaham and wife of conductor David Robertson, as soloist in Ravel's Piano Concerto in G. The concert also includes Nielsen's Overture to Maskarade, the Danish composer's comic opera, and Tchaikovsky's "fateful" Fourth Symphony which takes an emotional ride out of darkness into light.

The Russian finale on September 16 features a double debut by guest conductor Outwater, as he makes his first appearance at the Hollywood Bowl and also his first with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. The program highlights some of Russia's greatest composers and works beginning with Tchaikovsky's Marche Slave, and continues with Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No. 1. For this piece, the LA Phil is joined by master keyboardist Toradze who recently recorded all five of Prokofiev's piano concertos. The second half includes selections from Romeo & Juliet by Prokofiev, Tchaikovsky's "Pas de deux" from Act II of The Nutcracker, Shostakovich's Tahiti Trot, Op. 16 ("Tea for Two"), Mosolov's The Foundry , and "Procession of the Nobles" from Rimsky-Korsakov's Mlada.

YASUO SHINOZAKI is currently Assistant Conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Shinozaki regularly leads the Philharmonic in its community concert series and in the Toyota Symphonies for Youth programs. Continuing to work in a wide range of repertoire with orchestras throughout Japan. Shinozaki has also conducted the Helsinki Philharmonic as well as the Turku Philharmonic. Shinozaki made his opera debut in 1993 with The Marriage of Figaro in Tokyo and has since conducted at several opera houses in Japan. Shinozaki completed his conducting studies at the Vienna Musikhochschule with Leopold Hager and has also worked with Seiji Ozawa and Bernard Haitink at Tanglewood.

EDWIN OUTWATER joined the San Francisco Symphony's conducting staff in 2001 as Resident Conductor and Wattis Foundation Music Director of the SFS Youth Orchestra. As Resident Conductor, he works closely with Michael Tilson Thomas, accompanying the orchestra on tour and conducting numerous concerts each season, including Adventures in Music performances, which are heard by more than 25,000 students from San Francisco schools each year. A strong proponent of music education, he designed the Florida Philharmonic Family Series and its Music for Youth program, heard annually by more than 40,000 fifth-grade students in South Florida. A native of Santa Monica, California, Edwin Outwater attended Harvard University, graduating cum laude in 1993 with a degree in English literature. While at Harvard, he was music director of the Bach Society Orchestra and wrote the music for the 145th annual production of the Hasty Pudding Theatricals. He received his masters degree in conducting from UC Santa Barbara, where he studied with Heiichiro Ohyama and Paul Polivinick. This is Outwater's debut with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and at the Hollywood Bowl.

Pianist ORLI SHAHAM has established an impressive international reputation as one of today's most gifted young pianists. Her recent seasons have included successful debuts with The Cleveland and Philadelphia Orchestras, both resulting in re-engagements. Shaham has given numerous acclaimed recitals, including appearances in New York and Washington, D.C.; and has also been awarded two of the most prestigious prizes given to further the development of outstanding talent, the Gilmore Young Artist Award (1995) and the Avery Fisher Career Grant (1997). Other career highlights for Shaham have included several tours of Japan and performances with the National Symphony, the Minnesota Orchestra, and the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra at Avery Fisher Hall. In 1997 she released "Dvorak for Two" with her brother, Gil Shaham. In addition to Aspen, Ms. Shaham has performed at the Mostly Mozart, Ravinia, Caramoor, Verbier, and Spoleto (Italy) festivals, among others.

ALEXANDER TORADZE is internationally recognized by musicians, critics, and audiences alike as a masterful keyboard virtuoso in the grand Romantic tradition, distinguished for the highly emotional intensity of his playing. In recent seasons, Toradze has appeared with Valery Gergiev and the Kirov Orchestra in Düsseldorf and six North American cities, including New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C. He also appeared with Zdenek Macal conducting the Milwaukee Symphony and Gerard Schwarz leading the Seattle Symphony, as well as performances in Hong Kong, Santiago, and Stockholm. He has most recently recorded all five Prokofiev concertos for Philips with the Kirov Orchestra and Gergiev. In 1991, Alexander Toradze was appointed the Martin Endowed Professor in Piano at Indiana University, South Bend.
