Evening is Third in Los Angeles Philharmonic's Baroque Variations Series
SUNDAY, JANUARY 16, AT 7:30 PM
The Baroque Variations series is supported by a generous grant from the Michael J. Connell Foundation.
Tetzlaff is known for his performances and recordings of repertoire ranging from Bach and Mozart to 19th-century masterworks by Mendelssohn, Beethoven, and Brahms, and 20th-century concertos by Bartók, Berg, and Stravinsky, as well as world premieres of contemporary works. He will spotlight Bach during the Baroque Variations concert with the Sonata No. 2, Partita No. 2, Sonata No. 3 and Partita No. 3. J. S. Bach's sonatas and partitas for solo violin have been central to the violin repertoire since the mid-18th century. Tetzlaff has performed the complete unaccompanied violin works by Bach at New York's Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and Cleveland's Severance Hall.
The Baroque Variations series, which made its debut during the Philharmonic's 2003/2004 season, continues to offer presentations of Baroque music on both period and modern instruments, performed by some of the world's most admired ensembles and soloists in a four-concert series. This year, a non-subscription concert has also been added to allow a broader audience to hear this important repertoire.
Performing the fourth concert in the Baroque Variations series on April 13, 2005, is Il Giardino Armonico from Milan, led by Giovanni Antonini. Nicholas McGegan leads the famed Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra with soprano Lisa Saffer on February 25, 2005, as a non-subscription performance.
Since the performances of the Schoenberg Violin Concerto that brought violinist CHRISTIAN TETZLAFF to international attention just over a decade ago - with Christoph von Dohnányi and the Cleveland Orchestra and with Sergiu Celibidache and the Munich Philharmonic - Tetzlaff has performed with conductors such as Vladimir Ashkenazy, Christoph Eschenbach, Franz Welser-Möst, Esa-Pekka Salonen, and Roger Norrington; with the orchestras of Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Toronto, as well as the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Concertgebouw, and the Vienna Philharmonic. Tetzlaff also frequently performs chamber music with artists such as pianist Leif Ove Andsnes, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, clarinetist Sabine Meyer, and cellist Heinrich Schiff. Tetzlaff was born in Hamburg in 1966 and made his concert debut in the Beethoven Violin Concerto. He worked with Uwe-Martin Haiberg at the conservatory in Lübeck.
