German conductor and pianist Christian Zacharias returns to Walt Disney Concert Hall to lead the Los Angeles Philharmonic on March 24 and 26, at 8 PM, and March 25, at 11 AM. The Classical-era program features Mozart’s Piano Concertos Nos. 6 in B-flat major (K. 238) and 19 in F major (K. 459), as well as Haydn’s Symphony No. 31 in D major, “Hornsignal,” and Vanhal’s Symphony in G minor.

Christian Zacharias, in the dual role of conductor and piano soloist, is known for his interpretation of Classical-era music. Mozart’s Piano Concertos Nos. 6 and 19 in F major, Haydn’s Symphony No. 31 and Vanhal’s Symphony in G minor were all written between the 1760s and 1770s. Showing his affection for the music of this period, Zacharias traveled around the world performing and conducting the complete Mozart piano concerti, as well as other great works to celebrate his 50th birthday and the Millennium in 2000.

Upbeat Live, a pre-concert lecture series, is free to all ticket holders. Pianist and composer Lucinda Carver is guest lecturer for this series of Upbeat Live. March 24 and 26 Upbeat Live takes place in BP Hall at 7 PM while Upbeat Live for the March 25 matinee is on stage in Walt Disney Concert Hall at 9:45 AM.

CHRISTIAN ZACHARIAS is considered to be one of the most remarkable musical explorers of our time. Zacharias achieved international attention as a prizewinner in the Geneva Competition in 1969 and the Van Cliburn Competition in 1973. His first-prize win in the 1973 Ravel Competition in Paris began an international career comprising recitals in all the major capitals of Europe, award-winning recordings, and concerts with the world's leading orchestras and conductors. Zacharias also appears in chamber music recitals with partners such as the Alban Berg Quartet, the Guarneri Quartet, Heinrich Schiff, and Frank Peter Zimmermann. In 1992 Zacharias launched his conducting career in his debut with the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande in Geneva. His success there yielded invitations to conduct the Bamberg Symphony, Northern Sinfonia, English Chamber Orchestra, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, and Dresden
Philharmonic. In September 2000 Zacharias assumed the post of Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne and was appointed Principal Guest Conductor of the Gothenborg Symphony in 2002. His New York conducting debut in 2001 at the Mostly Mozart Festival was followed by conducting engagements with the National Symphony and Seattle Symphony and a two-week festival with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Zacharias' more than 40 recordings for EMI reflect his affection for the music of Scarlatti, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, and Ravel. In recent years, he has been seen in three documentary films: Domenico Scarlatti in Seville, Robert Schumann: The Poet Speaks, and Between Stage and Greenroom.
