Rising star Han-Na Chang brings her exquisite musicality to Walt Disney Concert Hall in recital on Wednesday, April 20, at 8 p.m. Her performance is part of the 2004/2005 Colburn Celebrity Series, presented by the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association, featuring the world's leading virtuosos. The Korean cellist surprised the world by taking First Prize at the Rostropovich International Cello Competition when she was only 11 years old. Since then the Grammy-nominated best-selling recording artist has matured from child prodigy into a much sought-after guest performer on the world's most prestigious concert stages.

Chang's program demonstrates her various musical and virtuosic abilities. Her performance opens with Ligeti's Sonata for Solo Cello and continues with J.S. Bach's Suite No. 3 in C Major for Unaccompanied Cello, BWV 1009. The second half of the program features Britten's Suite No. 1for Solo Cello, Op 72. This suite, which comprises a recurring Canto and six movements, was inspired by and dedicated to the legendary cellist, Mstislav Rostropovich, a fitting way to end the program in homage to Chang's mentor.

Han-Na Chang's recital is the seventh of eight Colburn Celebrity Recitals this season at Walt Disney Concert Hall. The series concludes on May 18 with pianist André Watts.

Cellist HAN-NA CHANG has established an extraordinary international career, performing regularly on the most prestigious concert stages of Europe, North America and Asia. She first won recognition for her exceptional musical gifts in October 1994 at the Fifth Rostropovich International Cello Competition in Paris, taking at the age of 11 the First Prize as well as the Contemporary Music Prize, unanimously chosen for both awards by Maestro Rostropovich and 10 other jury members. Since that time, her superb artistry and virtuosity coupled with the astonishing depth of her interpretations, have placed Han-Na Chang at the forefront of the world's new generation of artists. An avid recitalist, Chang maintains a balance between her appearances with many of the world's great orchestras and her chamber music activities. Recent recitals have included appearances in Milan, Florence, Bologna, Paris, Lisbon, Bilbao, Athens and London (Wigmore Hall), and in Japan. The next tour of recitals in musical capitals of the US, Europe and Asia will bring Chang back to her fans in cities as far and wide spread as Munich, Cologne, Hanover, Milan, Florence, Bologna, Rome, Genoa, Berlin, Valencia, Los Angeles, and Tokyo throughout the next two seasons. A two-time Grammy nominee and an exclusive recording artist for EMI Classics, Chang has recorded four albums, each best-sellers worldwide. Han-Na Chang has studied privately with both Mischa Maisky and Mstislav Rostropovich. She is continuing her academic studies in philosophy at Harvard University.
